anyone changed oil yet on 5th gen?

i understand there is a canister in the 10 model and i would like to tackle my first oil change. was hoping there is aguinea pig out there with tips?

I'm over 2600 miles on mine and thinking about changing it at 3000 miles the first time, myself. It is a canister or cartridge filter on the bottom front of the engine.It looks like you will have to take off the bottom skid plate to get to it. Potential PITA! I think ,the front skid plate is hinged so take out some bolts and it will swing forward to get to it.I had it down to take off my sway bar but sometimers disease is kicking in at the moment!

Just wondering....What does your oil look like on your dipstick? Mine is still almost clear after 2600 miles and still looks new. Usually when the engine is new you will get exhaust gas blow by when the rings are still sealing at engine break-in and the oil will get dark. Not the case in my engine.Does it seem like your engine is getting stronger as it breaks in too??

The skid plate is hinged, take out the bolts and it will swing forward I believe to get to it.

Changed ours at 1000 miles. I have a 2008 Tundra that is a piece of cake compared to this thing. Yes the skid plate is hinged, however unless you have it on a lift or above a pit it doesn't swing down far enough to access the oil filter (canister by the way requires a 65mm flute wrench to take apart). I had to remove the plastic piece in front of the skid in order to remove the thing. Then after I got it off I cut off the hinge tabs so I wouldn't have to keep removing that plastic piece. Good luck.

You might try it from the top. The 4th gen V8 filter is considered impossible to change from the top by most, but it can be done reasonably easy with just the right method. Just get a stool and try each arm at every imaginable angle. Might be impossible but worth a try.
 
thanks for the info. i only have about 1700 miles and yeah my oil looks new as well. i am planning on changing it around 3k regardless since i'm not sure how long the oil has been sitting in the vehicle prior to purchasing. probably overkill but... as for power, it's been strong to me all along though i'm still hesitant to really push it yet. I had an 06 prior to my 10 and its just as powerful as the v6 from the previous gen and it gets better gas mileage than my last one.
 
I'm creeping past 4k and was told by the dealer that 5k oil changes are fine.

I also have heard from other auto manufacturers that there are occasionally additives in the first oil and that your first oil change isn't as quick as all the subsequent ones. Don't know if that's a myth or not.
 
It's called break-in oil. My BMW Z4 M Coupe had it and it had to be changed at 1200 miles.

Toyota did not on my '06, not sure if it's changed for '10. Honda uses a break-in additive in the oil and doesn't recommend early oil changes for that reason.

Must be where I heard it. My wife bought a new Honda a couple years ago.

Toyota does NOT use break-in oil. Honda does, but even they do NOT recommend changing oil earlier than recommended time.

The lone exception is the M-series BMW. I had a BMW M3 with the 3.2L engine...and yes, you do have to change oil at 1200 miles, and then per car computer after that. My Mercedes does not recommend early oil changes. My Acura does not either...so, i am not even sure if Honda still uses "break-in" oil anymore.

As for the 2010 4runner, i would definitely go by Toyota recommendations (10k miles/1 year). Please don't waste money and follow old folklores. :)

Yes but I can either go by the Toyota manual or by some website where an anonymous poster said 1 year/10k.

I think I'll go by the book for now. Besides, my unlimited powertrain warranty requires 5k oil changes to uphold the warranty.

True , go by the book for now,5k oil changes, until it's official.

But the so called anonymous poster on the Prious forum backed it up with proof in a attached letter(again ....did you read the attached thumbnails at the bottom of his post?) from the Customer Service Operations Manager to the Chicago Region Service Managers,that looks pretty official to me.I highly doubt their oil policy is a regional policy and ALL service managers either will or already did recieve this memo and will go into effect next month.

You can print out the attachment and ask your local Service Manager. Here is the first page of four.

Thanks. Didn't look at those.

I suppose it won't do any damage to change it more frequently and since I must to keep my aftermarket unlimited lifetime powertrain warranty I probably will stick to the 5k schedule.

What year M3 did you have? I just sold my beloved 2002 M3 in October with 45k miles on it because of police/speeding problems,SMG tranny gremlins, ... long story.
The M3's computer decided when you needed to change the oil and do inspection checks by fuel flow thru the engine. So if you beat on it/raced it(more fuel flow) it adjusted the number down and if you babied it,it went the other way.

Let me guess, you bought the unlimited powertrain warranty at your local Toyota dealership? Your dealer must have been extremely happy...here you are paying for the warranty AND you dumping money into their service center. :dancin:
