So when I first got my truck I went to jiffy lube, and the guys told me they thought the threaded stud was starting to strip out, but they were able to get it tight.
So the next oil change, I decided to do it myself, since I trusted my own work more than Jiffy lube. Indeed, I had trouble getting the filter to tighten up, but I continued to spin it with an oil filter wrench, and eventually it snugged up.
4000 miles later, I'm dreading doing the oil change, and considering not doing the filter, just the oil. Well that's bad etiquette, so I pick up 6 quarts of mobil1 full synthetic and an oil filter.
I go to the oil one off, and it's pretty mangled from tightening it on the last change. I get it turning, and realize that since it's mangled, it's hitting the motor mount and not spinning freely. I ended up tapping it a bit with a pry bar and hammer to get the thing off.
Then I go to put new one one, and it wouldn't really thread on straight. Acted like it was cross-threaded, and when it did go on straight, it was hard to turn it. I realized the motor mount was scraping on the filter enough to scrape off the paper label.
Then it dawned on me, that that is why it's so damn hard to get the thing to spin on! So I took my dremel out and took a slight amount of material off of the filter. Made sure to wrap the hole-side in plastic to keep shavings out of the filter.
Put it on, and the thing was barely scraping the motor mount, but it allowed me to easily spin it on, straight, to hand tight, no problem.
Well this makes me fell about 80 times better, as I was dreading it fully stripping at some point, and beign totally screwed.
Now, how the hell did the clearance issue happen? Maybe a wreck earlier in it's life?
Anyone else ever seen this before? Or is the mobil1 filter just too fat? Slightly bigger than OEM?
