Anyone ever ran Geolander 285/65r17 tires?

I need to buy new shoes for my 2006 Sport Edition 4Runner and I am particularly interested in the Yokohama Geolander 285/65r17. I am doing 98% of the time on-road so these are great tires for my application. I have a Daystar 2.5/1.5 lift and just got 17" sequoia wheels (19mm offset instead of the stock 30mm).

Only Yokohama is offering this size which is pretty much the same overall diameter as a 265/70r17 tire. The only difference is the width of the Geolander which is approx. 11.2" instead of 10.43" for the 265. Given the fact that I will be using a lower offset than stock wheel, my assumption is that I should have no fittin issues.

But I would like to get some comments by some 4th gen owners who run those tires on theirs 4Runners? Any pics available?

I am running the Geolander stock sized tires on my 04 V8 Runner and am not happy with the tread wear. They wear out too fast considered how expensive they are. I rotate them and they are just wearing out way too quickly. They do run nice and quiet and handle well, but I would consider other choices. I certainly am next time around.

I am currently running yoko geolander 265/65/17 on my 07 sport v6. i havent had a problem with them i drive to iowa about 2-3x a month so since october ive put on about 5k miles on them and havent had any abnormal tread wear or road noise. but i also plan on putting on a lift and bigger tires so i wont have these for much longer

My recommendation is to NOT go for some oddball tire size. You really have no good reason to stray from the most common tire sizes. In the 2% of the time you might be offroad and you happen to damage a tire or if you are a road trip and blow a tire out on the highway, do you want to be stranded for days while you wait for replacement?

You only gain .8" in width by going with the oddball size.

I recently put on Nitto Crossteks in 265/70/R17. Good price. Quiet. and nice road manners. Plus it has a nice aggressive looking shoulder.

As far as the treadwear goes, I am hearing mix reviews: some say they last longer, others say the opposite...it all comes down to the mileage you are doing and your driving style..

If I can gain 0.8" of additional width, I'll take it. If I am blowing a tire, I still got a spare so no worries there: this reason alone does not justify to stay away from the size...

Any other thoughts or pics?

Geolander H/T-S or A/T-S? I ran the HT's (stock size) for around 75K miles and they probably had about 10K left on them when I sold them (highway miles). Compared to the other HT's I had on the truck; stock Bridgestone Duellers and stock Dunflop Grandtreks, the Yoko's were leaps and bounds better all around.

As far as the width goes, as long as you clear your UCA's when you bolt them up, you should be good. You'll know right away when they slap them on.

Ugh... Sounds like what I got from those Dunflops... If that. Got about 55K on my Bridgestones, but they were toast by then.

I currently have Geolandars on my 2006 and I am not happy with the tread wear either. They are also noisier than the original tires. I don't think I will buy Yokohama next time.

I ran the ATS version and only got about 40k out of them. Looked decent but became very loud at about 25k. Replaced them with the Michelin LTX M/S. With almost 50k, I am very happy with them. They don't look as aggressive but do fine for the occasional light offroading. Well worth the $$$.

I used to run 285/75/R16 Yokohama Geolandar AT2 tires (predecessor to AT-S). I run them successfully all across Moab on my old FZJ80 Cruiser. They were a decent tire. I don't think the AT-S holds the same reputation as the older more aggressive AT2. I would read the reviews on http://www.tirerack.com before I jumped into a $180-200 tire when there are so many other better options available. Just my .02. You can obviously do whatever you like, but I don't the the extra .8" of width is going to give you an extra performance and traction. You could have clearance issues with the UCAs.
