Anyone had their transmission rebuilt?

Just picked up the 4Runner after having it looked at today for some problems. Kinda pissed with the guy because I don't think he even really looked at it as well as he should have but either way I guess the transmission needs rebuilt.

They quoted me $2500. Just wondering if anyone else has had this done and what the cost was? I know it will vary state to state and shop to shop but I'm just curious.

Not sure about your question, but I would go have someone else take a look if you dint trust the other guy.

Sounds like another milkshake. Be sure to get a new radiator too.

considering labor and if it is a 4 wheel drive 2500 is reasonable provided they actually rebuild the whole transmission and replace the torque converter. However before you do that look here Level 10 Toyota PTS Bulletproof Transmission A540E, U140E A340E, A341E, A350E, A650E, A750E, A343F and get a price on a performance transmisison and compare.

If you have to get it rebuilt consider buying one from a salvage yard. You can usually get one for $600 or less, which could be a fraction of what you would pay for the rebuild

The list price for a level 10 "Bulletproof tranny" is $3200.00 and comes with a 30 or 90 day warranty + you have to send in your transmission. How is that not a rebuild? Even if they put in "performance" parts, it comes with such a short warranty that there seems no point unless you are racing and the Toyota parts just won't hold up. I think you can get a new Toyota tranny for $3500 - not installed so why buy a level 10 - it doesn't make much sense.

I would go the scrapyard route.

I bought mine from a yard for $600 and did the swap. Still running great.

how would you know for sure if a transmission is bad vs the TQ converter or something else ?
