Anyone have any experience w/ the Toyota battery warranty ?

The Toyota battery in our 4 Runner is getting weak - you can hear the sound difference now when starting. The P.O. had it replaced by a dealer 08/11 and the battery has 84 months in big red letters on the case, so I assume that is the warranty duration.

I also assume it is a pro-rated warranty, and am trying to figure out if it is worth fooling w/ the dealer or just buying a good Ever Start from Wally World.

The prorating isn't as fair as you'd think it would be. I also bought a Toyota battery and had it fail on me in just over 2 years. The kicker was if it failed before 2 years, they would give you a new battery for free. If it was over 2 years old, they would only give you a 50% prorate towards another one. 2 years isn't 50% of the life of a 84 month battery. I don't know where the prorating goes from there like if you had 3 or more years since the purchase. Since you have 5 years on it, it would be my guess they are either going to give you very little or nothing at all. But, it doesn't hurt to go to the dealership and ask.

I was only a couple weeks past 2 years so the parts gal gave me a break and just gave me a new one. I'm hoping this one lasts longer. I've usually had good luck buying batteries from the dealer, at least I did with my Subaru. I use to buy auto parts stores batteries but I've never gotten the advertised life out of any battery I bought from one.

Well, here is what I was told FWIW.

According to the Service Advisor I spoke with at the dealer that Toyota says sold the battery, Toyota warranty requires a copy of the original invoice.

Fine - you can pull that up, right ?

Well, according to this guy the Repair order number on Toyota's website was not good , nor could he find the VIN # -and, this is the selling dealer !!

I think the guy I was "privileged enough" to speak w/ just did not want to mess with it.

Probably not worth it. You will have to likely pay 75% of the cost of a new battery, plus shop labor or your own labor.

highly doubt they would warranty it out if you the current owner did not purchase it. I've seen the battery prices relatively cheap at Toyota compared to everyone else, but they are manufacture to recommended CCA not above.

Original purchaser with original receipt is a pretty common practice for any automotive part.

I have been happy with my interstate battery and how they have treated me when issues arose. Worth looking into.

Yup, I've never heard of any store honor a warranty for a battery you did not buy.

Wal-Mart will. Just you only get date of manufacture instead of date of sale if you don't have the receipt. At least that is what it says on the receipt they give you. (I just bought one for my son's FIAT. Where else can you get a battery at 9pm on a Sunday night?)

I believe NAPA does the same thing, at least they did several years ago. I stopped buying NAPA as better alternatives became available about 15 years ago.

You are correct for battery brands like Exide and Interstate that are sold by many different stores and chains. But I think most stores that have their own brands will warranty those batteries without receipt by the date code on the battery...Toyota being a likely exception.
