Anyone have this problem??????

Alright this is what happens:

I put it in reverse, back out of my spot or driveway... then when I put it back into drive.. the engine revs a touch but the truck won't move until the gear finally clunks into place. This doens't always happen.... but useually about 1-3 times a week. Also the time it takes to finally drop into to gear varies anywhere from a couple seconds to almost 15-20 seconds.

I have an 08', 4 wheel drive, V8, sports edition.

ANY IDEAS???!!!



Of course I've called the dealer.... but I had to leave a message so I'm waiting form them to get back to me.

I get a bit of the hesitation you're describing on the first start of the day, but don't recall ever noticing it later in the day...possibly a warmup thing. Seems like this was discussed early on when the 4th gen first came out as normal to protect the mechanicals from the driver. Try a bit of searching.

However, 15-20 seconds sounds extreme and unsafe...could you be exaggerating just a bit? My hesitation is probably under a second in reality...just long enough to notice it after coming to a complete stop in reverse, shifting to D, and pressing the go pedal.

It could be something in how we back up or possibly a driveway slope/speed combo that's confusing one or or more of the electronic systems. For instance, after every complete stop in drive, the "brain" has to decide whether or not to engage hills start assist...it might at least think about what to do in reverse as well.

I use to think it was a "start of the day thing".... or shall I say end of day, cause I would only notice it after pulling out of my spot after work. But it seems to happen no matter what the grade or time of day, or how long I have already been driving.... it happened one time in the middle of an intersection... I briefly backed up to let someone in, then it hesitated. As for any exageration... I wish I could say I was.... but there has been times when I've sat there for a good 15-20 secs then it would clunk into gear pretty hard.... and of course I've had the times when it just hesitates long enough to get my attention and eases right into gear.

I have an appt. on Monday to get it checked out... I'll let you guys know what they find.

kev, good luck.

if possible, have the service writer observe the issue you described.. do this before you sign the work order. sometimes they will send the truck back to you with the comments "could not duplicate"along with a bill for 100 bucks.

I have a brand new--less than a week old 2008 Sport V6--that had that exact problem while pulling forward yesterday from a parking space at work. Just curious if the found the root cause.

I will know tomorrow!!! There is kinda a long story that goes with this.... it includes a previous trip to the dealership and some testing. But I don't want to bore you with this..... so I will just give you the end result when I get there.

Hey Cyberwired...

I appologize for the delay but I wanted to be sure the problem was resolved before I told you what happened..... so this is what happened.

When I took my runner in a few weeks ago... they tried to get it to recreat the problem..... and they did. This was something that none of them have ever seen before. They contacted Toyota.. (which baffles me cause they are Toyota)... anyway... They came to the conclusion that I was low on transmission fluid. Within the first 100 miles the reverse hesitation thing happened again. I decided not to call them back because I wanted to see if it would continue after that 100 mile period. They claim that the truck has a 100 mile period of the computer relearning things anytime it is reset..... not sure if they reset it, but they did the first time it was in. Plus I had to drive to LA and I wouldn't have been able to leave anyway. So I am now about 3 tanks past that service date... which I guess is somewhere around 1000 miles, and nothing as happened since. I probably won't be convinced its fixed until I go another 1k or 2k miles with nothing happening.

Have you taken yours in yet?? If you have.... what was your experience??? Is your Sport 4x4?

As for the bump from behind problem.... they say that Toyota said that its normal for the truck to do that. They say its an extra down shift. I know alot of guys claim that some grease fixes the problem.... But does it stay fixed?? Does anyone have a slightly older 08 V8 Sport where the problem just went away after a few miles??
