Anyone here work at a Canadian dealership?

I'm in the market for a trail. Found a couple through some google searches and emailed for quotes. I've been back and forth with 3 dealers, one place is at ~$1400 off, another ~$700 and my local dealer is puzzled that the other places are offering anything below MSRP.

Any tips and or tricks that have worked for you folks? Does calling in / showing up help show your serious and not some internet low baller?

My goal is to be about 5-10% below MSRP, is this too lofty?

MSRP is about 10.7% over invoice, so you're not going to get that, and especially not on an ordered trail.

I think 5% would be an attainable goal though with enough leg work. I just got 6% off, but for one on a lot. For sure go into the places you have a good feeling about and make them know you are serious and not just kicking the tires. Ask for delivery dates, etc.

Are you just shopping in BC? I assume you guys pay PST on vehicles as well. Have you tried taking a drive to Grande Prairie to see what's there?

Thanks for your insight. I guess I'm at 3.9% with the one dealer, so pretty close.

Good idea, only tried BC dealers. I didn't see anything on the GP site, but I should drop them a line to see what they have / what is coming in. I believe they can even charge the PST so it's not a hassle.

Any more tips out there for Canucks on the hunt?

CarCostCanada.ca

All online until you sign on the dotted line. My dealer did a cost+$500. They had an internet specialist call me. They didn't have the T4R Trail I wanted, it was in another city, so they brought it in for me. The guy I actually handed me the keys was a very junior sales guy that didn't no anything about the vehicle. I suspect that the low man on the totem pole gets these types of orders because its a flat rate commission. The price was non negotiable.

I assume BC will get their PST when you go to register the car. At least that's what happened to me when I bought a new car in Alberta and registered it in Saskatchewan.

I did the same thing as Zeder - got a car cost report to find out the dealer "invoice"* price and negotiated from there. Emailed the dealers around me with the car cost report attached saying that if they agree to invoice + $500 I'd walk in that same day and sign the paperwork. One immediately agreed, another came close. The truck I wanted wasn't on the lot but within a week they had one already on the ship re-routed for me.

As I said above, I think I came off as a serious buyer because a) I knew exactly what truck and trim I wanted, and b) I already spent a couple bucks on a car cost report, and although not a huge cost ($20 or so) it certainly signals a level of seriousness that not a lot of people walk into the dealership with. You may not get responses from all the dealers because some may think invoice + $500 isn't worth it, but again its a relatively easy transaction at that point and you don't necessarily know what kind of internal incentives they get for sales.

* I put "invoice" in quotations because apparently it is not totally accurate in that there are hidden incentives given to dealerships from the mother ship, but it gives a reasonable approximation of their costs.

Re: CarCostCanada - I just went to their website and it spit out the same price as listed on Toyota.ca. Am I missing something?

Also, the Halifax dealer charges $500 for 'security' etching/stickers on the door windows. When I told him I wasn't going to pay it, he eventually agreed to subtract that amount from the MSRP price, but that it would still appear on an invoice.

I got 2500$ off, plus no delivery charge I think it was 1370$, plus roof rails 300$ +-, floor mats and 150$ off the TAG alarm. I think it' a good deal, but it took 3 hours. I think 6-7% off is attainable. I was lucky I did not have to order the truck it was on a train when I put the hold on it.

I think once you click in a few steps from the font screen you have the option to pay to see the dealer invoice price.

Thanks. I bit the bullet and bought the report. Looks like it's going to save me a few bucks.

A local dealer contacted me within 30 minutes of generating the 4Runner dealer invoice report. I didn't know it, but CarCostCanada has a dealer network who are notified when someone buys and generates a report.

Within 24 hours I was offered a 4.5% discount off the MSRP for the SR5.

So far, worth the $30 bucks I paid for the report! :)

Deals during COVID-19?

Hello,

I want to buy my long time waited 4Runner this year.
Anyone bought 4runner after COVID 19?
How much discount could you get?

Friend at work did recently, couple weeks ago I think. There's some "don't pay for 6 months" event out in Ontario right now and his finance rate is 3.99% over 48 months. Better than nothing. He traded in a vehicle so thats where your real negotiation value is, you know they tell you we can't do much better then $750 off the purchase price but oh hang on a second you're trading that in? Maybe we can offer you better than wholesale on that hang on a minute... that's the game over here. People aren't buying vehicles out there presumably these days, you should easily be able to put a few dealers against each other to give you a decent amount off MSRP. Good luck !
