Anyone Install Component Speakers in a 5th Gen?

Has any brave soul cut holes in their front and rear door panels to install component tweeters? If you have pics of where, that would be awesome!

I'm trying to figure out the best location to put the tweeters that has adequate room between the door panel and the door without causing interference, and can't bring myself to apply the hole saw just yet. I'm skeered. :help:

After scouring this site for pics, and the rest of the internet, I can find plenty of Gen 3 and 4 pics, but the 5th gen dash and door changed and removed the best location just below the sail panel. It's possible I will turn my door panels into whiffle balls before I get the right spot.

Any help is appreciated!

We have tweeters in the dash.

I've replaced my tweeters and i can hear my Highs very clearly but also my speakers are all amped.

I'm replacing all the speakers.

Dash: Infinity REF-3022CFX 3.5"
Front Door: Infinity REF-9620CX 6X9" with 1" component tweeter
Rear Door: Infinity 50.11CS 5.25" with 1" component tweeter
Rear Hatch: Hertz HCX165 6.5" coaxial
Sub: Kenwood KSC-SW11 under passenger seat

These will be powered off two Kicker KEY 180.4 amps on a Tacotunes plate under the driver seat.

It's front and rear door placement of the tweeters that's freaking me out!

oh nice! it didnt even occur to me to put in an additional speaker in the dash.
well looks like you gotta cut or you can always use that cone they provide and just doubleside tape it to the dash or to the pillar. it'll look tacky but if you dont want to cut thats always an option.

I have Focal's all around and an Alpine type-r 12".
I wanted alpines or infinities all around but the audio guys said go with focal (not the toyota specific. not going to pay a premium for "oem specific" lol)
Dynamatted all my doors but not the floors. unfortunately im using a truckbox vs my full sized sub-box. i need the space in the cargo. doesnt hit the same :(

I did the toyota specific focal 6x9 component up front with tweeters in dash. Rear doors and hatch are 6.5” focals. This all runs on a 700 watt 5 channel jlaudio amp and audisson bit ten processor. Subwoofer in the works.
 
after doing the homework, I'm going to replace the dash speakers, the most crucial upgrade IMHO, next week. still waiting for the last part in the mail.
 
I did subaru/kicker tweeters in the dash and toyota focals all the way around. I don't think component tweeters are necessary to be honest. But it wouldn't hurt. The ability to change speakers in 5 mins is quite a luxury to be honest and with great results to boot. The focals are pretty cool.
 
I have Hertz Audio components with tweeters dash and 6.5 mids in doors on separate channels of an Audison 5 channel amp fed by a BitTen. The sub out is going to a hidden JL 10".
I left the original stock speakers in the rear door and tailgate running off the stock HU amp. I may replace them eventually but it sounds great as is.
You want your sound coming from in front of you anyway.

you can run 6 1/2 mids and tweeter together in the front doors if you dont want to cut into the doors. just make brackets and it will work.
 
The Route to Victory

I have decided to employ an age old method for determining proper tweeter clearance. A method of unknown origin, but first appears in the writings about Noah's Ark, when he needed to install a pair of 6X9 components, but didn't know if he had the beam clearance; Play-doh.

Not having any handy, I shook down some neighbor kid for his stash. Kid owed me money, broke my window last year with a baseball, so he had it coming!

Now with a pad of Play-doh slightly bigger than the tweeter to-be-installed stuck to the back of the door panel in stratagemic locations, we emplace the door panel, check, move the Play-doh, replace door panel until we're ready to cry because just about every location lacks clearance:sobbing:

But... perhaps some judicious use of beer and the infamous dremel tool, we can make them fit. I plan to trim the tweeter bracket down as much as possible, retaining only the threads required to secure it. This will leave the deepest part of the tweeter swivel that needs to be cleared, which is much smaller than the whole tweeter bracket.

We have the technology, we have the means. This will be done... at some point.

Did you just switch out the speakers on stock head unit without amp?

A little known fact is that speakers weren't installed in pairs until Noah installed them in the Ark. This is when stereo was invented...you could say, by God. If you don't believe he likes music, you've obviously never seen Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey.

TBH, I don't think you really need the second pair of tweeters at the front as the image from aftermarket tweets in the dash already sounds good especially when tuned properly and the fact that you're putting 3.5" tweets there. But if you must, you can place the other pair on the sail panel. As for the rear doors, you'd have to cut a hole on the door panels, probably close to the handle.

Yeah, I debated the extra tweeter up front, but I do appreciate being able to hear every tippy-tap of a drum stick on the high hat, so I kept at it.

The sail panel on the 5th gen is no good for tweeter placement. That was the natural go-to spot, but they changed the dash and door interface, and the sail panel is basically right up against the side of the dash board when closed. I've found a spot about 4" above and directly inline with the 6X9 speaker cut-out where the front tweeter will fit.

The rear door has a spot about 2" above and slightly behind the speaker cut-out where it will fit, depth-wise, but it's basically pointed at the passengers' leg. I will rarely, if ever, have passengers, so it works for me.

If I had to do it all over again, I would just put coaxials in and skip the drilling holes part. Major props to the Japanese engineers; they filled every friggin' useful millimeter behind those panels with something!

Didn't realize the placement of the sail panel and its small size until now. No way to fit any tweeters there.

You are one brave soul to be drilling your door panels... Pillar-pods and plastic trims wouldn't hesitate, but damn. Good stuff!
 
Focal Speakers

I went a similar route as Louisiana Overlander. Focal IS 690 Toy front, Focal IC 650 Toy passenger doors. I saved some and went with a Hertz coax in the rear hatch. Also put dynamat in the doors. This made a big difference but I knew it needed an amp.

Added JL audio XD700/5, audio control LC 7i, and JL audio 10" ported micro sub. It took some tweaking but I am happy. Getting the gains and the crossovers right on the amp has a big impact on the sound. It's crystal clear and will thump well beyond what I need. Many could probably go without the sub and use the XD500/4 which is a good bit cheaper but I hated to go down that road and then think I needed a sub and an additional amp. The xd700/5 fits under the driver or passenger seat easily and drives everything. You would never know its even there without looking under the seat. IMO it's a technological marvel.
