Anyone into geocaching?

Think of it as a high-tech version of hide and seek. This is a gross oversimplification .... but --- basically people hide things ... post the GPS coordinates .... and your job is to find them.
geocaching.com is the site for all the info. They keep the database of local caches and just about anything else you will ever need.
When you find a cache, you open it (it going to be a sealed waterproof box of varying size) and write in the log book to indicate you found it. Some caches have something inside --- so, you get to take the "treasure" that you find --- but, you have to leave something in return.
There are also multi-caches .... where you find one cache that includes clues on where the next one is ... which could go on for several caches until you find the final one containing the treasure. These are definitely the most interesting (and entertaining) because it turns the whole thing into a fun little puzzle.
Then there are locational caches --- coordinates of interesting places that you may not have known about in your local area. Theres a lot more than this --- but it is better to just poke around the geocaching.com site to find out more.
Like I said -- I am just getting into it --- so, I know very little. I am lugging around my laptop as my primary GPS device while I am waiting for my Dell Axim x51v to arrive ......

I've always wanted to try one. My friend has tried it and appears to think it's fun. Basically all he has is a hand-held GPS system. The coordinates are given in the geocache details so that should enough.
I would like to try one hidden on a hiking trail, I'm not too excited about those hidden in playgrounds and Disneyland...

Generally, there is a little adventure. These things arn't always placed in easily accessible areas. Some require hiking, climbing, or just generally getting to an area that you can't reach by normal means. Since Tallahassee, FL doesn't have a very rugged terrain, a lot of the ones here are hidden off of paths in city parks or in the woods, etc. In places where there are good hiking or climbing trails, I imagine it would be a lot more fun.

Motor Trend magazine used to do something similar once per year..... they would "hide" a few official Motor Trend license plates in various locations and then print the GPS coordinates in their magazine.
Whoever found the plates would win a prize.
I think the easiest way to find something using coordinates is to combine an in-car navigation system and a hand-held GPS. That way you could enter the coordinates into your vehicle to bring you as close as the roads will take you and then use the hand-held GPS to find the exact coordinates, assuming they are off the road.

supposedly it's pretty big where I am. Last year some guy fell off a cliff and died in a park around here while trying to find a cache... bummer
