Not interested in trailers at all. They give more space and storage but limit mobility which is why I chose the 4runner as the platform. Landcruiser + trailer when I have more money and require that much more comfort.
As for the mounts, I'm really liking the defender setup.
Has anyone ever tried to extend the original track system on the roof? I couldn't find anything on searches. Not sure if it's a good idea, but I'm thinking a small cargo box aero cargo box above sunroof infront of RTT to help with aerodynamics and also to store the sleeping bags. Wife and two little kids.

The Tepui uni-strut RTT rack is a great option for mounting your roof
top tent to. It is very sturdy, allows for the mounting of baskets,
lights, and other accessories easily, and only cost about $60 in
materials. Below are the steps involved in building your own Tepui
RTT rack. Please email us for more details or questions.
1. First remove the existing cambered bars by removing the
end caps with a hex wrench and sliding them out of the tracks. Then
remove the three flat cross bars by unscrewing the knobs. Be sure
to keep the square flat nuts that are in the track as they will be used
to attach the uni-strut.
2. Purchase (3) 10ft lengths of uni-strut from a local hardware
store. It is usually located in the electrical hardware section. Also
purchase (10) of the ¼” flat washers with the 3/8” hole, (6) 3/8”
spring nuts, and (6) 3/8” x 2” bolts. These should all be available
next to where you purchase the uni-strut because it is the hardware
used to assemble uni-strut. Cut one uni-strut into (3) 40in sections
and the other (2) into 6ft sections. Then paint with black enamel.
3. Purchase longer (about ¾”) 9mm screws that thread into
the square flat nuts in the roof track of your 4Runner. I suggest
bringing one flat nut to the hardware store to ensure you get the
right thread pattern. Using a flat round washer and a lock washer
fasten the (3) 40” uni-strut pieces to the track with the open end
facing up. Then place the (2) 6ft uni-strut pieces open end facing
down at the desired width. Slide the spring nuts into the bottom
strut with the spring facing down. Use a square washer and lock
washer and slide the 3/8” bolts thru the top track and tighten into
the spring nut below. Repeat this at all 6 locations the long and
short struts intersect. At the two rear intersections you will need to
add two flat ¼” washers to keep the top long uni-strut bar level.
Optional basket was purchased at Curt Industries for about $80 and
can be attached with U-bolts.
4. The Tepui RTT can be mounted directly to the tracks. You
can either mount with the tracks directly above the long uni-strut
bars or perpendicular however if you mount them above you will
need to purchase longer (2 ½”) bolts with matching nyloc nuts in lieu
of the 2” bolts that come with the tent mounting brackets.

Have a 3rd gen 4Runner with stock roof racks. Would the be sufficient for a RTT? If not what do you guys suggest?!

My understanding is they all do.
I am hoping to better understand how to mount a Tepui RTT using the Defender rack mounts.
I am unsure how people like Stockwell25 are connecting the defender rack mounts to the mounting racks on the RTT. The videos I have watched about the installation show mounting the RTT to a cross bar on the roof rack and the pictures Stockwell 45 provided are difficult to tell exactly how it is connected.

Click on the link in the OP's post dated 3/26/14. It shows how to make your own cross bars using Unistrut from a hardware store. You would mount the Unistrut to the defender mounts instead of directly to the rails.

Are you aware if this will fit a '16 SR5 4runner? I doesnt say on their site as far as fitment goes.

It looks like the mounts I ordered only fit up to an 02 4Runner. I'd call them for the right part number for a 5th gen 4Runner.

i saw a post where someone did exactly that. they got another roof rack from a 4runner in the junk yard and used it to extend the stock roof rack further forward. they had to drill a couple of new holes and do some nut inserts, but it looked pretty good.
ill dig around when i can and see if i can find it.

Some people seem to think you can't do it with the stock sun roof, but I could swear that in the original article I saw the guy did it with a sunroof.. I think you'd just have to be careful with drilling the holes.
