Anyone need some tools?

I was just sent this link. Apparently Craftsman is having a sale. Seems to be good prices on Torque wrenches and a gajillion times better than Harbor Freight.

I could always use more tools.

Unfortunately, Craftsman quality seems to have really fallen off in the last decade or two. I do need to take my 3/8" inch-pound torque wrench to get it warrantied though. First it quit clicking, broke a bolt finding that out, then just literally fell apart. I don't trust their impact sockets either.

I have only broke one of my craftsman hand tools and it was user error. I have had pretty good luck with them, better than with anything from Harbor Freight. I figure its a chance for us broke folk who can't afford a $500 Snap On phillips screwdriver to get a little better quality than Harbor Freight.

I'm realllllly fighting the urge to buy a set of the ratcheting wrenches, but Craftsman isn't what they used to be....ahhh....so torn.

Buy them, they are very useful. Can't speak to long-term quality, but they seem good.

I have had the same Craftsman 400-some-odd-# piece tool kit I bought when I graduated college and realized how much it would cost to have a mechanic fix my car for me (a Buick Century, at the time). This was back in the mid 90's and I still have probably 280-300 pieces of the original kit left. Most of the missing were lost at work or loaned and never returned, and an innumerable of broken screwdriver tips.
The way I figure it, I don't make my living with these tools but I need them to last longer than the one-and-done tools from HF so Craftsman makes for good middle of the road quality and value. In fact if anything would keep me from buying their tools it would be that they no longer honor the old "No questions Asked" return policy. I have rarely had to return anything, but it has happened and it was as simple as they promised it would be. simply pull a replacement off the shelf and there you go. The first time I had a broken tool return rejected I told them to piss up a rope.

Craftsman stuff used to be great and I snag old stuff I see at garage sales, but they've gone way downhill recently. Kobalt stuff is about the same price and has a great return policy, and it's been pretty solid for me.

These days Craftsman tools and screwdrivers are all made in China or maybe even Taiwan. Check for yourself.

Years ago I got a tap/die set for a birthday, I noticed it was made in China. The Tap handle was crooked. I felt if they couldn't even make a tap handle straight that I could not even trust their taps and dies. I returned the gift, and found their at the time biggest set, was the last one they had and it was Made in USA. The difference in quality was noticeable. I returned my gift for store credit and promptly shelled out the extra $100 plus bucks to get the Made in USA version. I never looked back. Anybody that has ever used a tap handle in a drill press or on a lathe with a centering point to keep the bit straight when starting the tap knows and can appreciate the difference a quality tool can make.

The only tools Craftsman still claims to make in USA is the CRAFTSMAN PRO line.

I experienced the same thing. It was pretty off-putting. I really want a set of ratcheting wrenches, but I just don't trust the Craftsman name any more.

Well, a few months back I picked up a good deal on a Lowe's Kobalt set. I might have to pick up a Three ton jack, jack stands, and creeper set though. Don't have any of those... And I want to get on with future LBJ, suspension lift wrenching and be ready for it.
