I just cannot see how a new 4R is worth more than $25k given the looks and minivan like interior. I hate to be negitive on this thing but It is an aweful design. I just hope the take some cues from the new FJ and return the 4R to a rugged vehicle and not just another one of the MANY fluff Toyota SUVs.

it does make it hard to justify the price of the 4runner when comparing it to the Nissian Xterra.
But the resale value for the 4runner is so strong that it could be worse. You could go out and buy a limited edition explorer and have a vehicle worth far less in 2 years that a 4runner.

I take it you don't own a 4runner. If you did own one, you'd know that this isn't a fluffy Toyota SUV. Though the interior is pretty plush, this truck can handle its own on the trails. If you wanted a cheap interior, you're looking in the right direction by going towards an Xterra.

I don't normally reply to these but since I am logged on I will bite. I considered gettting a new xterra once my 4 runner was hail damaged but the nissan's just do not hold their value as well and their reliability has not proven to be as trouble free as the 4 runners. I think that past performance is a good indicator of what to expect in the future, especially when you consider reliability. For me I will take the slight tradeoff in stock 4wd performance to have no worries when it comes to drivetrain, electrical problems and sqeaks and rattles. One other thing I have noticed when logging onto the xterraownersclub is that most of the xterra owners note that the mpg hovers around 15-16 mpg and typically they are driving around 65 mph on the highway. I can only speak for myself but I calculate getting 17-18 mpg and I am typically driving 85 mph between NM and CO. Lastly, for me I got vsc, dac, 4 wheel abs, lockable center diff, and part time 4 wheel drive with skid plates (even if they are not that great) all on the base model without having to add any extra packages besides 17 inch wheels. I think it is the greatest bargain in base model 4wd suvs. Sorry for the long winded post.

The only reason I'll get an FJ is because it's a Toyota and its off-road capabilities. In terms of looks, I'll pass on the FJ anyday for a 4R. If you want to get into ugly, Pathfinder (look at the rear and rear side glass), Pilot (even more f-ed up looking than the Ridgeline), MDX (are they trying to acheive a round look or squared), Exploder (like the fat version of the Expedition) and I can go on. I don't know which similarities you see with the 4R's and a minivan, but if anything it's more truck than car or van. On the contrary, the only fluff in Toyota SUVs is probably in the Land Cruiser, but don't get me wrong it's still a capable off-roader, unlike a Range Rover Sport.
Why the 4R is worth more than 25k is easy, Toyota reliability, resale value and popular demand. For the same reason why Toyota can sell a comparable vehicle for more than their competitors.
Yeah, the Caravan is awesome, it started the minivan.

I guess you were kind of asking for it elemint, by going on a site that is targeted at 4Runner owners and saying that 4Runners are awful. I think I kinda get where you are coming from though. Last month when my friends XTerra blew up, he decided that he wanted a Titan so I drove him over to the Nissan lot and I drove my 4Runner right onto the lot and parked it right next to the Pathfinders and while he was shopping, I got out, lifted the hatch and opened all the doors and began showing off my 4Runner to Nissan shoppers passing by just for laughs. I've had 3 4Runner's and a variety of foreign and domestic cars and trucks and I honestly have to say that my current 4Runner is hands down the best vehicle I have ever owned. It cost me in the low $30K's and after 8 months, I have to say that it has been worth every penny.

I am just curious to know who is holding the gun to your head & forcing you to look at the T4R? Clearly you do not like its looks. Personally, I say go for the Explorer, Xterra, Pathfinder, Pilot, etc. If that is what will make you happy, go get it. Coming on here & bashing the 4Runner serves no purpose.

i've owned an explorer, a pathfinder and 2 4-runners. Hands down the 4-runner is the best midsize suv out there for the $$, no question in my mind. The explorer just plain out costs too much (ltd V8 vs ltd V8), and the performance is abysmal in comparison...the nissan was great for the 1st year, but years 2 and 3 show a major amount of wear and tear, rattles, ride quality degraded, interior wearing etc etc...the 4runner, my 2003 had 42000 miles, was three years old and still drove like it was brand new, no degradation in ride quality, the interiro was still pristine and nothing broke or went foul the whole 3 years...and i beat on this thing, driving in NYC, beach running etc...Some people don't like the exterior, to each his own, but performacne wise, there's no comparison in my mind...i just got my 2006, and i plan to keep it for a loooong time...try keeping an explorer for more than 100K miles, GOOOOD LUCK! and the Xterra, dude, please, its a friggin pickup truck with an SUV body on it...not in the same league as the 4R
