Anyone Paranoid- Heat from the Exhaust Trapped by Skid

Just curious if I am the only one paranoid enough to install an exhaust wrap. I just was not liking the fact that the factory did not install a transfer case skid even though it appeared they had plans to and I can also see where they are protecting a few key spots with a radiant shield. I got paranoid with some kind of high temperature related failure and warranty denial so I installed this over the summer but just now sharing. I used this same type of wrap on my turbo downpipe on my WRX and I know they are very effective at keeping the heat in. Hopefully these pics will attach.

You've got bud built skids? Do you mind posting some detailed photos of the whole system you bought?

By the way, I used the PTP Turbo lava wrap, 25ft x 2" wide. Perfect length for this application. It looks cool too :beer:

Racehoss, here are some pics of Bud Built Skids. I guess I dont have very many pics but better than nothing. In the one shot of the KDSS, you can see that I trimmed some material away from the sway bar cutout (the silver paint). Easy mod to do as I saw some rub marks from the sway hitting the skid when fully extended. I am very happy with BB but I would recommend some higher grade bolting/washers from what they supply!!

That wrap looks great. I put some cheapo wrap on my dakota when I added JBA headers, didn't wrap the headers just the Y-Pipe. My wrap was exposed and not protected like yours under a skid pan. I used either SS or aluminum wire and made a twist tie about every 4-6 inches.
My particular truck didn't have much insulation on the firewall and the footwell of the truck ran hotter than the rest of the truck. After the wrap there was a noticeable improvement. The wrap keeps the heat inside the exhaust. Nice Job.

Reviving the thread - curious if y’all think the wraps will corrode the exhaust pipes over time? Heard it traps moisture and heat = recipe for disaster?

You are paranoid. Toyota has sold over a million 5th gen 4Runners since 2010, not to mention all of the other vehicles with GR-FE and likely similar exhaust routing. If this was an issue, we would know.

Not only is the exhaust pipe surface temp relatively low there, but the space between it and the housing is huge. Air is a great thermal insulator.

Wraps like this on headers can be very detrimental. After heat cycle, the wrap stretches slightly (with the expanding metal) and then condensation can build between the wrap and pipe. Ceramic coatings are used in place of wraps by most “performance professionals”.

You may cause this pipe to rot out prematurely while addressing a non existent issue. Looks cool though!

An exhaust wrap is certainly not going to have any positive effects, but people love to waste their money on crap. It's a bad solution in search of a nonexistent problem.
