Anyone plasti-dipped their trunk emblems? Roof rack?

I tried dipping my rails today... going to have to shave off the couple inches that are nearest to the plastic covers and redo those. For some reason that area seemed to build up a lot of excess while the centers of the rail look great. Patience and light coats are definitely the key to success. Here are a couple pictures that are crappy enough that you can't see where it's messed up, to give you an idea of what it should look like. Looks much better than the aluminum in my opinion, and is a good solution while I wait to get a rack.

Well, there goes my different idea lol. I should have my black TRDP within a month and I'm gonna do the same thing to break up all black. Make sure you post up some pics when you do it! I think it'll look great.

Good minds think alike. Lol. I won't be getting mine for another 2-3 months. :Cry: So let me know how it turns out. I also plan to use black bedliner on my trd skid pad and roof rack.

Pretty sure bedliner on roof racks is going to be a problem. Your cross racks are not going to move.

Here's my emblem in gunmetal grey from Home Depot. You don't need to tape too close to the emblem. The way plastidip peels is like magic. I just used a toothpick to start the voids inside the Toyota logo. 30 min between coats and peel it before it's completely dry.

Roof rack, shit I didn't think of that. Probably just rattle can the roof rack with satin black then.
skid plate seems too plain to me I was gonna use lineX just to have a rugged look but I'll probably just paint that satin black too.

Love it. How many coats of Plastidip? I originally wanted the metallic anthracite gunmetal with Glossifier which is slightly darker and I was going to do the TRD PRO emblems on the side too. Here's a picture of the same color I was going to work with.

so did you take your roof rack completely off or did you plasti dip it in place? seems like it would be hard to get the bottom of the rails if painted in place. thanks

I don't know what [MENTION=118948]blacksheep4[/MENTION] did but I did mine in-place (mostly). I did take off the caps to spray those. The problems I had with doing the rails in place were:
1) The coverage of the bottom and inside is not very good. It's not really noticeable unless you climb up and look.
2) With the cross bars, there are uncovered areas where the crossbars were attached and after moving them, it's not easy to get them back in the same place.
3) Even though I thought I had masked off really well since I covered everything from the bottom of the windows up, I still had overspray on the sides of the truck that was a pain to clean up.

When you show/say you didn't tape close to the emblem (or more specifically, between the letters) and then used a toothpick to start the voids, what exactly do you mean? I did my front months ago but hadn't gotten around to the back yet because I wasn't sure how to tape/cover between the letters. Did you just paint the whole open area solid, and then trace the letters with a toothpick (similar to what I think others sound like they're doing with a razor) to peel the plastidip off the paint between and around the letters?
Plasti dip is like magic. You use the toothpick to get it started and then just peel off. It just knows where the break points are so just go slowly. You won't need to trace anything.

I started to take the rails off because it would obviously be easier that way... but as I started to pop off the plastic covers I was worried about messing them up. I left them on and agree with everything [MENTION=14967]bpwwer[/MENTION] said. It's tough to get underneath, but like he said you can't tell that it's spotty unless you get your face in there up close. I plan on a full length rack soon so this is fine with me for a temporary solution. If I was planning on keeping them for a long time I'd remove them and do it the right way. Overspray was also a pain to remove until I got some Turtle Wax label and sticker remover, I put a little on a rag and the tiny specks came right off. Before that I was scraping individual specks off with my thumb nail... not the most efficient technique.
If you decide to leave them on my advice is to go overboard taping off and covering with newspaper. That way you can spray away without worrying and save yourself time cleaning up later. Good luck!

I had already taken the rear caps off because I was installing the cross bars so that wasn't a big deal. But I too am getting a full length rack so this was a temporary solution for me also. I forget what I used to get the overspray specks off, maybe bug and tar remover, but it was still a pain.
If this is something more permanent, I'd recommend removing them and doing a good job. As a side node, I have moved the cross bars and it didn't mess up the plasti-dip too much, but if that's something you'd be doing, maybe paint would be a better choice. If you do try to spray them on the vehicle, pick a calm day and like [MENTION=118948]blacksheep4[/MENTION] says, mask and tape like crazy.

Yeah, it's like magic. I really only used the toothpick for the stuff I couldn't start using a fingernail like the voids between letters. I didn't tape any more than you can see in the pictures. Most of the stuff around the outside I was able to start peeling when I pulled the tape and it just knew where to peel apart. Magic.
