Hey guys I just removed the sr5 decals on my wife 2010 and was wondering if anyone attempted to take off the 4runner on the back?
Anyone remove the 4runner emblem on a 5th generation?

Yep , I had them off already. They have that same type adhesive as the SR5 badges,maybe a little stickier .They don't come off as easy as the side badges and alot stays on the runner.
It's not flat under them though as there are 4 indentations in the chrome plastic handle part to help line up the 4-r-u-n-n-e-r badge when it was installed.
I pulled them off and painted the license plate garnish underneath.When you take them off ,it ruins the adhesive so you will have to buy some thin 3M double face tape and put it back on yourself. It turned out to be a PITA.
Probably easier to buy new ones and then paint them before they go on.

Harper, I'm assuming this is for the entire garnish, not just the letters? Also - how are you doing your parts search? ToyotaPartSales doesn't have the 4Runner listed yet, but I see we can still search by the part number, would love to know where I could find those!

Why not cover the 4RUNNER logo with black reflective decals. At night time, it would light up quite nicely. I had something similar on my GTP where it says PONTIAC on the rear lower bumper. I also had the side GTP SUPERCHARGED decals - ClubGP Store: GTP Badge Overlay - 97-2002 Grand Prix

I just removed my 4Runner emblems. I wanted to pass on a little info for others who plan on doing it.
The actual emblems come off very easy by using some fishing line and flossing behind them. You don't need to heat them up.
As others have said, it will leave a lot of the adhesive. It's a real PITA to get off. To be honest, not sure how you get it off without ruining the black plastic underneath. Needless to say, I ruined my black plastic, but it doesn't bother me too much.
First I used a plastic tool I have, kind of looks like a mini plastic crowbar, and scraped a good amount of the adhesive off.
Then I used some "Goo gone" and sprayed it on there and let it sit. Then I used my thumb, the best tool, to "roll up" the adhesive to get the majority of it off. That left the actual adhesive on the plastic. Careful, I gave myself a blister by pushing the adhesive.
I don't think the Goo Gone marred the plastic but then I used some Goof Off and while that totally took the rest of the adhesive off, it also took the shine off the black plastic so you could see exactly where I was rubbing the towel to remove the adhesive. Well, it's good thing I like matte black, I just took some more Goof Off and applied to the rest of the plastic so that it all matches now.
Doesn't look great, but at least I don't have any chrome left. I had already painted the Toyota emblem above and that look great.
There are some divots for lining up the emblems, but they are not as big or deep as they look in pictures, so they won't bother me either.
If it ends up bothering me too much, I might remove the plastic and paint it, or just replace it.
Hopefully someone finds this helpful.

Are you planning on painting then re-installing all the lettering back on the rig?

I was, but then I realized the indents weren't that big and noticeable. I have the lettering coming today, but I might just end up selling them. I would have rather had the clean look look anyway. The indents are the only thing that keeps me swaying back and forth.
I think I am to paint the scuffed up section today. What do I have to lose? I'll post pics when I am done.

Just removed mine last night and put 3M carbon fiber wrap on the garnish. I used a piece of fishing line to "dental floss" off each letter, and then a plastic putty knife to start removing the sticky. I finised removing using Goof Off. FYI, the Goof Off didn't damage the shiny finish on the chrome garnish (Limited t4r), but I had a few MINOR abrasions from using a plastic putty knife. HUGE PITA to remove the sticky. I found that running the putty knife diagonally so that the tool kind of cuts across the sticky residue was the fastest way to get it off. It's like rubber cement on steroids.
Question: I am planning on putting my letters back on today using some 3m tape. I can now barely see the four placement holes, and I was wondering if anybody had any nifty tips for how to make sure the letters are lined up. It is not apparent to me how the little holes really help with lining it all up...should I use some gooey glue instead of two-sided tape so that I can fine tune the spacing after first putting each letter on?? If so, what glue? I thought I had seen an image of how to line these up, perhaps from the repair manual, but now I can't find it...

I probably cannot help you with your question about lining up the letters. However, if you have a photograph of the garnish with the carbon fiber wrap and without the lettering, please post it. I've been thinking about doing the same thing with black vinyl wrap but leaving the letters off.

Actually, that was my plan at first, but now that I see how empty that garnish looks, and how much you can see the carbonfiber pattern, I want to put the letters back on. I like the carbonfiber look a lot, but it is real easy to have too much of it IMHO. I think putting the letters back on will leave just the right amount of it visible.
