Anyone remove the flares on a Sport?

I'd like to make my wifes '01 Sport look less like a Ford Explorer, and more like a truck. Running boards are gone, and now I'd like to remove the flares. Has anyone removed these before?

if theyre what i think they are, thats a bad idea.

you will leave holes behind because theyre tabbed into the fender.

if you take them off, let me know your price, as my sister wants flares on her SR5. She's jealous of my limited all one color thing. she has the chrome bumpers. yuck!

yeah they are tapped in. I looked underneath and it would definitly not look right.. If they were aftermarkets it wouldnt matter but these came from the manufacturer and if you took them off i think it would make the fenders look higher and not realistic.

just my opinion but from the bolts i can see they are farther up the skirt and not lower down like a non flared runner would be.

Oh please don't take them off. That's one very noticeable difference between the base model 4Runners and the 4Runners that have more options. Gives it that luxury look, IMO. I know a lot of guys who would dearly love to have my painted fender flares, but I could never part w/ them. But who am I to say, it's your T4R, do as you please.

If you want it to look more like a truck, then chop the top off and make the rear a bed, lol.

While I perfer the smaller pre '00 plastic flares over the little bit too wide Limited ones I still wouldn't go flareless since it just looks too plain w/o them.

Thanks for the replies everyone, you were right. I pulled the front marker light to take a peek, and there are about 5 plastic expansion toggles in the fender, in addition to the 5 bolts in the wheelwell.

I think bigger tires will bring everything into proportion. The flares have looked a bit oversized to me since I took off the running boards.

Hey Lee, how do you like your MT/R's? Are they as quiet as BFG AT KO's? Would you trust them at 80 - 85 mph for long interstate jaunts?

It looks like 265/75-16's will fit easily, including the spare.
