Anyone replace their crank shaft pos sensor?

I think its on the top of the oil pump hidden by the alternator. you might get lucky and just have a dirty one with your mileage. Metalic sludge can interfere with it getting a good signal.
 
That's what i was thinking. I have the same problem with the ABS/speed sensors. I just need to drop the skids and pressure wash the bottom out, pretty nasty since I've been in TX mud for 5mo.

Is this what you're after? Imagine the harmonic balancer in front of that.
 
Thanks for the quick responses. I got it out but it wasn't the problem, i don't think. It stalled on me at the car wash while idling and failed to restart. After 30 min of messin with the crank sensor and other stuff I gave in and walked to Autozone for starter fluid. Then it fired up and died, so I had spark, so not the crank sensor. Plug on top of the fuel pump was loose. Hope that is the culprit for the problem. I need a new plug for that thing!
 
Replacing crank shaft pos sensor

Hey guys. My crank shaft pos sensor needs replacing. Do I need to remove the alternator to get to the sensor? That's what my first inclination was. Just wanted some feedback from someone more experienced. Thanks!
 
All I did on my '01 was unbolt the sensor (10mm), pull it out, bolt new one in. Nothing had to get removed to access the sensor.

Did u end up finding out what the problem was? Was it the plug for the fuel pump? Because my 4runner it starts up when it’s cold then it’ll run for a bit and then it’ll die then when I start it up again it cranks but won’t turn over. Wait a little longer to cool down then it will start but then after a while die out again? If u have any advice that would be appreciated. It’s not battery battery is brand new tested alternator it’s charging the battery changed iacv because I got a p0505 but still wasn’t it. Debating on changing my crankshaft position sensor but if there is another thing that it could be and cheaper thing that it could be I would like to do that first. Thank you

When you crank the engine but it doesn't start does your rpm gauge move any?

I don’t think so I change crank shaft position sensor yesterday but doesn’t seem to be the problem. After changing I was able to drive around the block for a while but then when I came back home to park I was letting it idle and then it starts to struggle to stay on but it would catch it self but then would eventually die. But starts right back up again after that idk if it could be fuel filter, ignition coils, or maybe some kind of fuel relay? Not too sure
 
Not unheard of for fuel pumps to go out. Kind of a hassle to check pressure,
but it can be done.

If the crankshaft position sensor is working correctly your rpm gauge will move when cranking
