Anyone running a full-time rear locker?

When you say full-time, are you talking a spool/welded diff? That's full time. I think you're talking about an automatic locker, like a Detroit.

Not welded. Automatic.

Might be a pain on road but I bet you wouldn't need to go in 4 wheel that often.

They're not that bad on the road, just take some getting used to. I do get through some stuff in 2wd that I couldn't before installing the locker, but some things you still need 4wd for. More importantly, some things you'll still need low range for.

I don't know about how well it would play with your locking center diff, though. Somebody else will need to handle that one.

With a locked rearend you would have to make sure you were in 4x4 on snowy or icy roads or cornering would be compromised.

Agreed...locked rear is very bad in snow. you drive sideways the whole time... I wouldn't do it on a DD personally. Get like a torsion limited slip...75% of the benefits with 0 of the drawbacks. Like a detroit trutrac. pretty cool unit.

Following this but want to disagree with the ice & snow comments. I ran a lunchbox in my previous Land Cruiser and never had significant issues in those conditions.

Locker in the snow is way better than Trac nonsense. You will always be able to move... it might not always be straight, but steer and compensate.

I agree with the automatic locker comments, not that big a deal, just get use to it.

Center-Diff
All a Center-Diff lock does is lock the power 50/50. If you are wondering if it would interfere, the answer is no. If anything it would increase the already stellar performance of an automatic locker off road.

Subscribing to this thread, I have been looking into a 'lunchbox' for my 4r which is also my DD. I have been leaning rather hard towards the Aussie for the simplicity of its design and operation. This thread is perfect for matching real world driving and testimonials from someone not trying to push a product for royalties.

When I was researching lockers, I found that almost all of the doom-and-gloom horror stories of driving an automatic locker on pavement came from people who hadn't actually done it.

While you're looking at lunchboxes, check out the Spartan. Less expensive than the Aussie, I think it's stronger, and I hardly ever notice it's there.

How does it do when in a parking deck, or parallel parking? My main conscern is how they act when you have to crank the wheel from lock to lock quickly. I have read that with a tiht turn you cant be on the gas with an auto... But how the hell do ya do that when backing into a space or ascending a parking deck?

They're fine as long as you're not mashing the pedal. I can turn at full lock with light throttle without chirping or scuffing the tires - it takes a certain amount of torque to make it lock up, and as long as you're easy on the go pedal, you'll have no problems.

I like them. plus when you pull up to the off-road park and everyone heres it clicking while your turning or backing up its like showin off with a performance exhaust everyone knows you got a locker back there which is always bad ass!
