Anyone running Continental TerrainContact A/T??

Searching I have only found one person running the Continental TerrainContact A/T on a 5th gen. Anybody else that has gone with this tire willing to share your experience? Even better would be a comparison to the Cooper Disc AT3 or BFG KO2 if you’ve had both.

I just identified a weak spot in the sidewall of my stock tires rotating yesterday so will be pulling trigger ASAP. I am between the following tires, but leaning towards the Continental just due to priorizing wet traction/braking and road noise but want some all-terrain ability and looks:

1) Continental TerrainContact A/T
2) Cooper Discoverer A/T3 4S
3) BFG KO2 (c-load)
4) Michelin Defender LTX M/S

I purchased the Continental TerraiContact A/T a couple of weeks ago. So far so good. They handle well in the dry and wet, they did well in the snow here this past week. Don’t know how they are off road yet.

I have about 5,000 miles on a set. The tread pattern on the Conti is less aggressive and they are quieter on pavement than the KO2. In clay/mud and sand they feel about the same, I think the KO2 dug through the muck faster, but enough to get excited about.

The Conti is also about $75 cheaper per tire.

After doing a bunch of research, these are the front runners for me in a couple of months.

As mentioned they are less expensive and a solid tire, with good reviews and positive test results on tirerack.

I'm looking for new shoes as well and was between Cooper at3 4s and Falken Wildpeak AT3s. I want 255/75/17 so I think I am going with the Coopers. Cooper in that size are 39 lbs vs. 46.5 for Wildpeaks in the stock size of 265/70/17. Now I am trying to find a wheel I like to match the tire. Good luck OP. Let us know how things go.

If the Falkens weigh more its all in the tread block depth, so you're wssentially paying for tired that will last longer. They're also mountain snowflake rated.

I recently went through the same decision and it was between the Conti's and the Cooper 4S for the 4runner.

I've run Contis for years on all of my other vehicles and they have been great. In the end, I chose the Coopers for my 4runner and they have been great so far (about 800 miles). Look better too, IMO. I don't think you can go wrong with either of those two tires..

The reason I chose the Coopers:

- 3 peak snow rating
- They were cheaper - on sale from Discount Tire Direct at the time
- I've never owned Cooper tires and wanted to try something new

The ONLY thing that i am concerned about is the hit on fuel economy from the reviews. Anyone with these tires noticed the decline in fuel economy?

For me, i am deciding b/w Michelin Defender and Goodyear Adventure AT with Kevlar.

GY is the front runner but Michelin is close. I like GY because of the stronger sidewall and fairly aggressive tread but still good on-road.

For the Continentals I only saw 1 review with lower mpg....and usually you lose some mpg with new tires anyway. Did you see several decreased mpg reports?

The Goodyears look solid - but for me, doing 10% or less off road and that not hardcore they're overkill.

I have these tores and have not npticed a decline in mileage. They are quiet, great in rain and snow. Have not had them in any serious offroad, just some
Minor stuff.

I haven't seen any drop in mpg and have been very happy with the performance in mud and sand. There's low highway noise and they don't seem to wander at highway speeds like the more aggressive A/T lines from Cooper or BFG. I think there's probably a drop in performance for extreme conditions, but I'm not asking it to do that.

Not on the 4Runner, but those were the last tires I bought for my Outback. They were my DD/light duty tire with KO2s as the heavy duty tire.

KO2s and Widlpeaks, no matter the load rating, from P Wildpeak to E KO2, are heavy duty offroad tires. The D/E Ko2 are stronger in sharp rocks, but both tires can go anywhere.

The Conti AT is a light duty AT that tracks extremely well on dirt and I am sure is a fine beach tire. I had a puncture in the neighborhood before I had 100 miles on the set. On road, it performs like a very good street tire. However, I found it unexpectedly uncomfortable. I am not talking dump truck ride, but just less comfortable than what I expected from a mild AT.

On the 4Runner, for light offroad duty and for rain/snow on road, I would rather try the Nokian Rotiiva AT. But the Conti AT is a fine tire as well.

That said, the Wildpeak in P metric performs very well on road and, at least in 265, there is no noise (you may get some in 285). I cannot comment for Conti AT comfort vs Wildpeak comfort on a 4R, but the Wildpeak is super comfy at 32 psi. On top of all this, the Wildpeak can handle any offroad terrain.

I cannot comment on Conti AT tire wear on a 4R, but initial wear on the Outback was unimpressive. Then again, initial wear is a poor predictor of overall wear.

In sum, I think the Conti AT is probably among the best light duty ATs, especially in places that see lots of rain, but there are better options if the vehicle sees more than dirt roads.
