Anyone running winter tires??

Hey;

As this is supposed to be the worst winter in 100 years.....I was wondering if anyone planned to run winters on their 2010 4runner? I have searched the internet for plain jane black steel winter rims.....with negative results. Does anyone know if they make rims that will fit the 2010 trail edition 4runner?

I must preface the fact that I am a completely mechanically inept so please bare with me.

I would like to have a separate set of winter tires on rims that I can switch from season to season.

Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Check the dealer and buy 4 steel spares . I priced them and I think they were around $70 . They (should ?) have the same of set and everything like your regular rims.
 
Yes, ready for the expected harsh winter.

Got the spare steelies from the Richmond AutoMall dealer at $99 each plus $2 each per nut (open or close-end, my choice). These fit both the SR5 and TE (not the Limited). Funny because that's where I got my 3rd gen, but not the 5th gen. Anyway, 1 local dealer quoted by $173 each, plus nuts; while another $134 each plus nuts; even more strange, a US dealer in Washington quoted me $143 US plus nuts.

By getting from the dealer, you don't have to be worry about the wheel offsets, hub size etc.

Now bring on the snow.:bravo:

I got a 2010 limited in September and I am planning on putting these rims on:

Sport Edition TK1

I will then put on a set of 17" Nokian Hakka R's. It will be expensive once I add the TPS but I don't drive lots of miles so the tires usually last me 10 years.

I know that many will see this as overkill but the stock limited tires looks like they will spin on wet grass and I don't want to miss a nice powder day because I couldn't get through the snow!

I don't think it is overkill at all we swap rims all the time on my wifes 09 Rav4 every winter we put the stock 18's back on with some Bridgestone bLizzak studdless tires. We have a set of grey aftermarket 18's for the summer. I guess the way I see it is my wife hauls our kid around everyday and I want them to be safe so if that piece of mine costs me an extra 600 in tires every couple years then so be it.
 
I had Nokian Hakkepelitta snow tires for my '03 4Runner for about 5 years. They were completely awesome the first winter, good the second, and went downhill after that. They were also frickin' loud, loud enough that I got rid of them earlier this year. Even though they had a lot of tread left, they just weren't giving me very good traction in the snow any more.

I haven't bought a replacement set this year, so I'm eager to see responses to this thread. I've heard that Blizzaks wear pretty fast -- any truth to that?

I have only had experiences with Hakka's for the past 20 years. I have had them on VW's, BMW's, Saab's and an Xterra. The Xterra had the samde studded hakka for 11 years but the rig only had 85,000 miles on it during that time. The studs were loud but everything was great.

Hakka's are pretty sensitive to warm weather driving. I know people that have left them on for one summer and they were trashed. I put my on just before Thanksgiving and take them off in early April. They last much better when they are run in cold temperatures. I am not sure where you live but if you live somewhere that is pretty warm in winter that may mess up the treads.

I have known a couple of people that switched to Coopers and blizzacks but they came back to the Hakka's. They are really good when you have to get somewhere in lots of snow and ice.
 
Has anyone just run the stock Geolanders in the Winter? I am curious to hear how they preformed in the cold tempratures and in the snow. I am still on the fence on whether or not I will put winter tires on my rig.

Just got back from a 2-day drive from Golden Colorado to Portland Oregon......went thru slush and some ice/snow over the Wallawa Mountain pass east of Pendelton and between Utah and Larimie Wyoming on the stock Bridgestone Duelers. Needed 4HI to pass vehicles, as the fast lane on I-84 was a bit icier than the slow lane. I was surprised that the Duelers were able to handle these conditions. Temperature was 28-degrees F, with wind at 30-40mph (headwind and side wind). Managed to even get them up to 55-60 mph without any problems with traction. I want to get the snow-rated Duratracs, but these Duelers were just fine for the conditions encountered.

Would I recommend them for deep powder? Packed snow? I doubt it, as a proper snow tire would instill much more confidence and is rated for those harsher winter conditions.

I was satisfied with what the stock tires were able to accomplish while using 4HI.

I have the Geolandar A/T-S for 3 winters. Great tire in the snow. I had to keep my rig heavy in the back (cases of water in the trunk) and shift from 1-2d gear on ice. Right now, I'm @ approx 70% thread left. Gonna test 'em if they'll pass this winter before i trade them in.
