Anyone who has parted out or sold a totaled 3rd gen

I'm looking for some advice/feedback on the part out process...

I totaled my 2000 limited, it had the multi mode transfer case and an elocker, and is now entirely stock with all my mods ripped out. The engine is still good with 130k on it..

I'm curious about a ballpark of the total you got for parting out your 4runner was? (if you dont mind sharing)

Also, if you had an option to sell the rig as is, what would have been the least you would have taken for it?

Lastly, If you did part it out... looking back would you have sold the truck whole if the option presented itself?

Any help is greatly appreciated...Thanks!

I parted out a 4Runner once. It was a HUGE pain in my ass and I would not ever do it again.

That said, I did make a whole lot of money off of the deal.

If you've got a whole lot of space, a whole lot of time, and truly enjoy dealing with idiots day in and day out, it's for you.
 
You will make money but it is somewhat a pain in the ass. If you advertise it on Craigslist, you'll get all kinds of people that want to buy the whole truck for less then what you paid for the total. They're just going to buy it and part it out. The nice thing about Craigslist is it usually more local so people will come and get the parts.
The shipping is the biggest PIA. It's up to you what you'll want to ship and what you don't want to ship.
Don't sell one little part which will inhibit the sale of the whole assembly or system. Yes, many people need that one part but then when someone says they want to buy your entire system and you don't have that one part it will ruin the sale. Your Elocker is a perfect example. Keep it all together. Someone will want the whole thing, even the front dif and that's what you want.
All that being said, I hope I never have to do it again.
 
As someone who has parted out ~60 of these trucks over the years, I can give you some honest advice. Don't take it as negative, take it as realistic advice.

1. Be ready for flakes, and lots of them. Even here on the forum. I've dealt with many people who "Absolutely want the part" then you never hear from them again. It's just part of the program, no real way around it.

2. Don't give our your address, give an address near you and then give them directions to your house. Never put your address in text form if you can avoid it.

3. Shipping; it can be a pain in the ass. People tend to think shipping only costs a few dollars, when in reality its very expensive. Make sure they are committed to the sale before pulling/boxing/checking shipping. Especially since you aren't a volume seller, you don't have boxes, packing materials, tape, shrink wrap, labels, etc sitting around so it tends to become a hassle. And NEVER EVER assume what shipping will be. Always quote a price and say "plus shipping". Some of the lightest items I ever sold cost the most to ship, simply because of size.

4. Be prepared for it to take a while, especially depending on the area you are in. Closer to major cities means more customers are willing to drive to you. I live in a relatively rural area, so I lose a few customers to that. I average about a year to year and a half per hulk, meaning to part it out and make a reasonable profit it takes a while.

5. You'll need a way to move and transport it once the suspension and wheels/tires are sold. Since you have an Elocker, the rear axle will be one of the first things that sells. No suspension=doesn't roll. And these trucks aren't light.

6. I don't give out numbers/figures for what you might make, since every area of the country is different. Obviously areas that salt the roads have a lot less usable parts on them, areas with hot heat and lots of sun have parts with more paint damage, etc etc. Sell things as assemblies when possible, or you are short changing yourself. Selling a $10 vent from the center radio surround doesn't do you any good if no one will buy the $35 surround now, etc etc.

If you have patience, tools, and time, you can make a good portion of your money back. I enjoy doing it because it keeps my mind occupied, and I like helping people keep their rigs on the road. And lets be honest, the money aint terrible either :)
 
People will ruin your sanity if you rely on Craigslist or similar.

I bought the 3 I got in the last week for $1400, $700 and $900. How much you make is entirely dependant upon how patient you want to be selling.

You can get $200 for a clean pair of sears or $125 much faster purely example. Prioritize what items are attention grabbers about it. Don't blow the e locker or longblock out for cheap cause those core items attract people and then brings additional sales. I sold $2600 worth of stuff off the trucks this weekend already and got myself tires, supercharger, new low mile longblock out of the deal as well.

Money to be made. If your short on time or patience from the get go. It's easier to sell the core items for fair money, then unload the majority of it for $500 or whatever someone would pay instead of waiting for your hair to fall out so you make $1500 let's say.

Plus if you have ever been a customer and heard feedback on people who don't budge on prices, screw someone over, or anything along those lines, the extra $20-$100 bucks you got at that moment don't put you further ahead when that guy tells 10 people not to buy from you in the future.

Part it out, sell the high demand stuff, make your quick cash, dump it. That's the method I'm using and it has worked excellent so far and kept my stress minimal.

One more thing I'll add is don't let local people take off without paying you cash for your parts. Never ever rely on someone saying they will pay you when they get home, or pay via PayPal. Often times they will pay via PayPal for goods/services which means you incur fees. Local sales should be cash only at the point of sale. I've had many people attempt to pay via PayPal and check, and the few times I've accepted anything but cash I've been burned.

And be sure you have your customer thoroughly inspect the part before they buy it, in the light and not raining if possible. Despite customers Inspecting parts , they will usually blame the seller for damage they missed.
 
I agree with 99Runnr as well. It does depend on how long you are willing to wait to sell something. For someone who just had one rig like you, the quick sales are the best. Hanging on to these trucks for a year becomes an eyesore in the neighborhood. Not to mention the stress and whatnot associated with keeping a truck that long.

Craigslist is a great way to appeal to people who want to do the same thing we are. Buy and resell, or find people who want to offer you garbage for something of value. It's not very reliable at making good business ties. What works better, is selling things to friends/making friends when you sell the item's. Like I did, and why I don't need advertisements.

I may/probably will sell on here eventually, I actually had 5-6 messages from people after the last time you asked me questions about the trucks I'm getting. Making a quick buck isn't selling an ignition switch to user 1 in Texas, boxing it, taping it, driving to mail it off for $25.

It's telling a friend his friend who is short on cash, can buy a good longblock off one of the trucks for $500 if he pulls it himself and does some other misc. parts removal and organizing while he is there. I don't have to do shit but turn the key in my Cummins and hand over money and it's coming back in without my hands getting dirty. As I said, make the quick money.

Just like when people panic over ammunition, see the signs coming, load up on 223 ammo, sell/trade it off at 500% profit and build your weapon collection for free. I did this for 7 years building my drag car too. Finding cheap car's, which use to be plentiful around here, parting out the niche item's off it. It doesn't make you rich or retirement money, but it enables you to apply it to bigger things in life when you have the openings.

Like you guys said, you want to be broke like me. My entire 4runner from start to finish and the parts trucks I have now, was purchased, modified, wrenched on, built and will be done with under $2500 invested using these practices. Considering I got this after totaling a $35k brand new truck and then had a few grand to get something new, things changed and I was/am broke. I haven't had a job since January 3 of 2015.

Last time, not rich, I don't make $40 an hour daily. I make money work for me though and my house is paid for, I get to tinker with what makes me happy for the time being, and I use these practices with everything I buy once I establish a solid interest in it. 6 months of these trucks has done that. Anyone with a heartbeat, one initial investment chunk and a trailer can do the same.

I've been using cl and a facebook page local to us for about 7 months. I'm selling to make money, but I'm also keeping certain things for my other exact same truck. I'm planning on selling what's left to a wrecking yard when I'm done or if I earn some more brownie points maybe build it into a buggy. So far I'm well ahead, but I've done the tear down, it's fun. Connections and patience, those steps are great advice. Good luck.
 
I've also been hooking up fellow runner junkies which has turned into more buyers( all leather seats for $200) to a fellow enthusiast. The hard stuff are weird sensors not part of assemblies.
