They should be doing a story on how spare tires are getting ripped off! That set-up costs a lot more than a catalytic converter. I would be pissed though if either went missing!

Thats nothing new, the news media just needs something to scare the public, your car is just sitting parts and when someone wants something they will take it, it's all a matter of knowing what vehicles sit where and for how long before the owner comes back, I've seen cars that had missing transmissions and engines

Stealing Cats is just ridiculous to me. For one thing it takes time. There are six nuts to remove and 99% percent of the time you have to break the bolts as the nuts are rusted on for life. I have change a few in my time. The nuts will have shrunk as they rust and change size and the easiest way to remove is to saw them off with a Sawzall. Maybe the buttholes are using a battery powered one, but that is going to make some noise. It just does not make any sense to me.

I saw this news segment last night. The targeted vehicles are typically 3rd gen 4R's and Taco's because they're the same configuration. Some Tundra's and Pathfinders are also targeted.

greasefingers,
It's beyond ridiculous, but they said it only takes a few minutes and they did show a battery powered sawzall. Each cat is worth about $35-100.

Another sad thing that happend a few months ago when gas was at its all time high, losers were drilling gas tanks of trucks and SUVs.

It sucks that low life's can't make an honest living the rest of us. But what can you do about it... if they want it bad enough, they'll get it. My dad saw an interview once, where the car theif said, "if he can't steal it cause it's locked down, he'll wait until the owner returns and steal it at gun point. What's more your car or your life?" I sure hopes it'll never come to that with anyone. But if my truck is going to be taken, they can have it, I just hope it'll never be found again. It's only material.

I hope everyone's 4R's stay safe.

Man that sucks, Is there a way to prevent this?

There is a lock available for the spare tire that I installed a few months back but does catalytic have something to secure it? The news mentioned $1200 to get it replaced.

Well, instead of lifting the 4runner to make it easier for thieves to get under and steal the cat, slam it...about 3 inches off the ground will do...:bonk:
