Anza Borrego Camp out

Which weekend are you free to go to Anzo

There was some posts on the 5th Gen forum about putting together a group trip to Anza Borrego, I thought we might more appropriate exposure here in the Socal section.

I updated the thread with a pole, it's easier that way to track everyone's availability, please select multiple dates for weekends you are free. I still vote Memorial for the extra day! but traffic is the negative.

I could make it two of the 3 days the last of May and the same for June. BTW, it's gonna be getting pretty warm out there by then.
 
Very interested, we can most likly make any date.

Planning any trail rides out there?

Is Glamis too far for a group day trip?
I would like to do some sand, but with others in case I bury it good. Went to Oceano/Pismo recently but was afraid to try the big dunes alone.

Average temperature in May at Borrego Springs, CA is 95+ degF (go to weather.com). Early May is low 90s and late May is high 90s. It's a dry heat with low humidity but you won't find me out there. I live for the mtns during the summer and fall. Have fun!

Might be a little warm but not enough to deter me.

As far as dunes are concerned, I think Ocotillo Wells is closest. Glamis shouldn't be too far of a drive though.

Depending on where you're at in the Anza Borrego, Glamis is about 1 hr and 40 minutes away. Ocotillo Wells (off the 78) is substantially closer. I'm going out next weekend, temps around 80...oh yeah. Only problem is, the closer we get the greater the chance of rain. :(

We're hoping to check out the mud caves.

Much closer to Ocotillo Wells is the Superstition Mtns. It's not as large in acreage as Glamis (40,000 acres vs 200,000) but there are still tons and tons of dunes and lots less crazy people. Check it out. Here's a link to a good site with info and directions. Watching the first video on there took me back to intermediate school when the Blue Angels flew over head for a couple of days. They practice out there and are only a few 100 feet above the deck. The second video has a plane with a GoPro attached while a bad ass mash-up plays with Queen, ACDC, Led Zeppelin, and Snoop. Can't go wrong.

There is an off road trail to get to and from because we used to ride from Superstition to Ocotillo Wells on dirt bikes (without license plates) and go to the Iron Door saloon. You'll still see dirt bikes and quads riding adjacent to the shoulder of some of the paved roads in Ocotillo Wells which is legal. Not in the shoulder but there is a trail just to the side of it.

You'll have fun. I definitely recommend Sandstone Canyon and Split Mtn. I've been to the mud caves too back in 2010 when we had an AWD Honda Pilot so a 4WD 4Runner will have no problems. There are some really cool slot canyons near there to hike too that are near them the caves. The mud caves are further south and you'd want to camp down there since it may take an hour or two just to get there on pavement from Borrego Springs. ABDSP is a huge park.


 
I'm probably in. I live in El Centro so it's really close. May and June are both really hot. Today was 90.
 
Fun in the sun i'm down....I know that area well. I was just there a few weeks back. 78 to Octillo turn at split mountain rd just between blue cafe anf ranger station to Fish Creek Rd which is the start of off pavement driving which takes you too all off the lil finger canyons, mud caves, oyster shell, sandstone canyon, etc. Theres tons of vertical canyon walls that block out constant direct sun light and heat. Cool spots to camp as you get about a mile or so in then opening to the access of evrything else or head over to Octillo in twenty-thirty mins.
Soooo many options the list goes on either way.

Im in even for a day trip.. But im only available the 25,26th of this month and the 2nd and 3rd of May. If no one wants to go on those dates ill ride solo if i have to. Been wanting to make it out there for a long time

Heh just an FYI if you have not been out to the deserts on a 3/4 day holiday weekend it can be INSANE. Now that may be really great fun or a real PITA depending on your goals :D

But either way just a heads up. :)

FYI I'm planning a trip THIS weekend (April 25-26), but that doesn't mean I wouldn't be up for something later if possible... Don't want to hijack this trip planning thread so going to start a new thread in case anyone is free this weekend for a mellow 4x4 tour of northern borrego...
