Any interest in a trip down south in October?

I haven't got my work schedule yet so not sure about what week.

Just getting an early heads-up. If you are at all interested please just flag interest.

Couple of photos from last time.

A stock rig will go most places although we will be doing some trails where a lift and sliders would be advisable. As mentioned, we will make alternative plans where necessary if its too challenging - no point damaging your rig!

Thanks for giving me a flavor of the place. I just finished a lift (Daystar) last weekend but I'm still running on stock Dunlops. Can't see myself dumping them before October, only have 8K on the Runner. I also have running board no sliders. With two small kids these will stay for quite some time especially now with the lift. From the looks of the picts there are a couple of trucks without lift (white sport, etc.) It also looks like most still have the boards on the sides. Do you expect to go into tougher terrain this time out? Have you set a specific date yet?

Yup I put up those photos to show you what we were running last time. The White Runner is mine. I had a completely stock rig as did a few others - no problems.

I also wheeled that trip with the two kids and wife.

I still have the stock Dunflops and have wheeled several places without too much drama - see my sig below. I will still be on the stock tires in Anza this time.

I have the Daystar lift and running boards removed. This gives adequate clearance. Other trucks may have an inch or so more height but that's about it. My smallest child Sam is 8yrs and he has learnt to clamber into the rig without the running boards.

By October I will have sliders so I can try out some more difficult terrain without the worry of damage. You will find our group are quite concerned about body damage - not our thing!

I'm new to this forum and a new owner of a 4 Runner. I interested in attending Anza Borrego in October but only have a Stock rig. I have an 05 SE V8 with 4WD so I would probably only go on the easy trails as I'am also new to off roading. I'm from the Bay Area so I'm not sure how it would work. Would I meet up with you guys on Friday night or Saturday Morning. It also depends on work. By the way I have been reading different posts for a couple of months and am learning a lot. Thanks to all of you who have put in awesome tips and suggestions.

Anza is a perfect place to start out with offroading. Much of it is dusty and undulating with room to turn around if its too challenging. You will be surprised though how competent your rig is in stock form.


As far as meeting up is concerned the options are yours. You might like to meet up with others who are travelling your direction on Friday, or simply meet up at a predetermined location on Saturday.

We will arrange a place to meet on Sat. morning for anyone coming then, eg San Diego guys might come then. The likely meetup will be in the carpark near the ranger station. Easy to find because the station is on most maps (either hardcopy or via GPS programs)

Hang-on....your coming from the Bay Area? Damn that's a long way. Bulldog is coming from up north (Morgan Hill) and I thought he had a long trip. Still - do this trip and you'll be good and ready for Death Valley sometime in the future.

In terms of major roads I imagine the easiest would be from James's in Pasedena

Is there gas available anywhere near where you'd be wheelin'? After my lift and tires, I don't get as good of gas mileage anymore. Maybe 240 miles a tank now. How much gas would we need to bring if there is no gas stations... don't want to run out.

As far as CB's go... I don't want one mounted to my truck, so a handheld would be the only option. I'm looking into a Cobra HH38WXST handheld. Is this one OK? I don't know what's good and what is crap. I usually just use the small walkie-talkies when we go wheelin'. I have 5 of them and just hand them out to the people who don't own one themselves. They are cheap, reliable, use 4 RECHARGEABLE batteries instead of 9 and compact. But if you guys use CB's, I don't want to be in the dark as far as communication.

One more thing... how far is AB from 91320? I don't know where to map to and have no idea how far it is away from my area. Thanks and maybe we'll see you there for a night or so.

91320 is thousand oaks right? i think expat is in your area so he can give you the skinny. i just google mapped it and 91320 is roughly 200 miles from AB.

i remember getting gas in AB too but i'm not sure where it was. rest assured theres gas tho.

as for portable cbs, several people have the cobra 75wxst and are happy with it. i'm planning on getting this setup once my $20 refurb dies . search here or yotatech for more info on the cobra.

There are several entrances into the park.
There are no gas stations inside the park but just outside. So it would depend on which way you come in. But if you fill up before entering the park you should be fine until exiting.

Others have given you the correct info.

Handheld CB's are fine. You should check out the Cobra 75 as it is a small box (no bigger than a cell phone - smaller actually) that hides away anywhere you want and the microphone holds all the controls and speaker. When you don't use it, you just unscrew the mic cable from the box and no-one knows you got it. See my truck for example of the interior setup.

There's gas all around the perimeter fo the trails so no sweat over gas. If you ran out so would we: . Don't bother bringing gas unless you really want to.

Can't remember the exact distance and time but I'm sure chiefiji is correct. I will check my GPS co-ordinates at home and post them for you later tonight.

I found out it's roughly 200 miles... should take maybe 3 hours to get there. 04RUNNER, when are you leaving? We live maybe 10 minutes apart... if you leave on Sat (and I can actually go), I would love to caravan down with you. I would also have a buddy come as well. I don't know if he'd bring his Taco or ride along, but he would most likely go if I can go. Thanks for the info guys.
