apexi SMART Accel Controller Review

Hello Everyone.
I am not sure if this has been reviewed or not.

I installed the Apexi SMART Accel Controller, Which give you 6 Different throttle modes.

3 Eco modes
2 Boost modes
1 Hi-throttle modes.

Does This product work?
Yes, I played around with Each Setting and the throttle Response changes. Hi-throttle/boost mode is very responsive and can waste your gas quiet fast. The Eco modes causes more Throttle lag, it can get you in trouble if you need to go Fast.
The LED Light is bright, each click will change the mode.

Installation Time?

About 15 minutes, Very easy to install, just need to find the Red/ Yellow stripe wire behind the glove box. It is the Reverse light switch.

Was it worth $200?
It all depends on if you want the faster or more Eco mode, Then go for it. When I was running the Eco mode I was getting 15mpg, Prior i was getting 14mpg. V8/4x4.

reviving an old thread to add my experience installing the apexi system today.

Saw the pedal commander/sprint booster, and was always thrown off by the price. ended up able to get the apexi kit (both parts) for under $200. Pulled the trigger for a few reasons:

1: something to do
2: brand name (excuse for a sticker)
3: curiosity, whether and how it works

Install did not take very long at all. the vehicle adapter harness seems robust and nicely made, wire/harness lengths are more than long enough, I mounted the controller box behind the hvac system so if I need to access it I dont need to pull the whole center part of the dash out again, and the reverse detection wire was very easy to tap, I was glad to find this thread because the Red/ Yellow stripe wire behind the glove box does in fact provide 12v when the runner is in reverse, as needed. I like that Apexi doesnt include a cheap T-tap either, but includes a small metal U shape to crimp onto the joined wires, and tells you to tape as necessary. I like that solution better, personally.

In "testing" the bits I can confirm are that the different modes do affect the pedal in different ways. switching modes while moving makes this very clear, especially when switching into/out of high throttle and low throttle mode.

Boost Mode 2 is the one that I like the feel of most, as it seems to raise the throttle position more aggressively over the first % than later %, doing what I think is probably the most "throttle lag elimination" possible with an auto trans and without modifying the vehicle ECU.

Button seems nice quality, cable is long. I'm mounting mine in the same place as dirty monkey, but I'm working on trying to 3d print a blank switch with a recessed flat surface and cable passthrough to apply the button to with the adhesive tape. If I'm able to make a blank that I'm happy with and proud enough of, I'll be linking it here after I upload it to thingiverse.
 
Pretty cool. I haven't seen this one before, is there a 4runner specific part number for it? or is it just a one kit for all kind of deal?
 
The box and button are part of 410-A001, which is universal, the 4runner specific harness is 417-A010. The harness is just the part that has the connections for the vehicle harness and throttle module

Do you happen to have any pics showing the exact location of that reverse wire behind the glovebox? That sounds like a super handy spot to tap in for a reverse camera/stereo install.:tea:

I actually dont have one, and I'd have to remove the lower glovebox again to get one, but long story short the wiring that goes into what I think is the ECU over there is what I tapped. on the far right side of the passenger's under-dash area. the harness isnt wrapped close to the connectors, and it was easy to find the right wire. I did not put a multimeter on it, and instead opted to see how the unit reacted with that wire tapped to make a determination as to when it was "hot" since the unit does disable in reverse, and the unit looks for 12v to disable, it should function as a 12v source in reverse for other uses too.

I did just get a blank printed that seems to work for me, the switch sticks a little more proud of the dash than I'd like, but I may be able to fix that by shortening the blank face a bit from this first model. here is a screenshot of the model and a picture of the switch as installed now.
