got a rear locker about 3 months ago, have used it a bit and it's been fine. have maybe 7K miles on it.
I ignored my rear breather and of course it blew gear lube thru the rear seals and to make that worse I was 800 miles from home. I topped the rear off along the way just to make sure I leaked all the way back home.
did the extended breather mod up the gas fill route. I could tell by the sound that the bearings had been washed out with gear lube, but still actually pretty quiet.
I did a rear bearing job, both axles. everything went smooth, all OEM parts bearings, snap rings, seals, ABS tone rings, both retainers. I have a press/durasol rear axle tool.
I did the grease test on each axle to make sure the retainer and seal were meeting up correctly, torqued everything to spec.
after bleeding and filling with 80W-90 I went for the drive of truth! what I got was a very pronounced gear winding sound. like I was riding on the school buss. At highway speeds it's a whine. it does happen much louder in gear and giving it. I do still notice it on coast but it's not nearly as bad.
obviously I did something to change how things were sitting. any ideas on where to start?
