Just coming in here to say thanks for this thread, it was VERY helpful in getting the new ARB brackets installed. I had to cut my frame all the way back, just slightly past where the sump guard is welded in there. Did the end-cap mod with a big Grade8.8 bolt in there as a stud. The bumper feels very solid despite the brackets feeling floppy when they are first installed.




I cleaned up the welds a bit before painting and then installing the bracket.

so i have a concern in the back of my head...

since I've installed the bumper / winch on my 4runner, the 6 bolts that hold the bumper to the frame mounts have concerned me about there strength...

These:

mount to the frame, then the bumper attaches to these brackets with 6 bolts. My concern is if those 6 bolts are tough enough to hold the bumper say if it was put under the max of my winch 8,000 lbs....

has anyone seen these bolts fail? and the bumper come off? if this has happened, what are the solutions that are used? stronger bolts?

why did you cut those brackets up?

i have used my warn xd9000 to pull two rigs out, and i had to anchor myself to a tree to prevent my winch from pulling me into them.

i have also used my winch to pull out a fullsize truck, requiring the use of an anchor(me to a tree again) and a snatch block to double my power. no issues at all.

I wonder the same thing. The brackets and their attachment ( with the end-cap mod done) seem pretty solid. But the winch and bumper are held onto the brackets with only those 6 bolts. They don't seem flimsy, but the way they attach through those captured bolt type nuts, just doesn't seem like the most idea setup. I guess we have to trust ARB engineers know what they are doing.

Just as a rough estimate, each 10mm bolt will have a sheer strength of about 8500 lbs, so those 6 bolts should be able to handle about 50,000 lbs (unless my calculations are way off).

sorry that is not my picture (pulled it randomly from the interweb) to illustrate the 6 bolts in question. I end capped my frame and bolted the mounts on the end as well. it's just a nagging thought in my head from the 'storries' i hear and read about some people winching off there front bumpers.... i've used my winch for recovery only twice, heavy snow once, and steep angle loose dirt the second, i only needed to get it started, then she pulled right out. So i haven't put it under full load yet... so i'm just wondering if somebody has had a major problem with them...?

well so far i have not used my winch on my 4runner while wheeling... the first two rigs i recovered were some sheriffs dept patrol SUVs that got stuck in the snow.

and the second was a friend of a friends truck he sank in a field trying to pull a horse trailer -4wd but on street tires and mud/swampish = no go

so actually not that epic lo but i try to get out and see the sights

Those are cut like that because the guy was modding the brackets to compensate for a body lift. He welded the cut pieces up higher the same distance as body lift height. Most people just drill holes up higher. No one really understood why he did this...

Actually they are metric class 8.8, which is about the same as American grade 5 bolts (120,000 psi tensile strength, or about 72,000 psi sheer). Given the surface area of a 10mm bolt is .1217 square inches, the sheer strength of the bolt should be 8765 pounds per bolt.
