ARB rear locker

I'd kinda like not having a cdl. One less thing to break. Throw a lever operated tc and I'd be set.

Oddly enough I do have traction control and I can turn it off.... but no cld as far as I can tell..... now maybe I just don’t have it wired up? If so how would I check?

Check underneath on the transfer case there should be a large black box/actuator for the CDL.

Nope a normal turn dial switch like everyone else.

Does your dial have a 2H or 2 High option like the 6 cylinders do?

It’s the v8 4.7L. So it has 4H 4L on the dial.... no 2wd.

Believe it or not the normal V8 and V6 use exactly the same actuator setup on the t-case. Looking underneath to see which is which won't tell you much.

The "diff lock" option is actually the middle position on the shift rod that controls 4wd. On the V6 the rod move into 3 different spots (2-HI, diff lock, 4-hi). This seems kind of odd but that's the way it mapped out when I had everything torn apart on mine. Normally switching from 2 to 4 it just passes right through that middle position. When you hit the diff-lock button, that shift rod slides "backward" toward the 2-Hi position to "lock" the pair together.

In order to make this non-diff-locked version for a V8 they would need a different t-case and actuator setup. That seems like a really, really odd bird that would have cost extra to produce. I'm betting it just has no switch. Therefore, that shift rod never stops in that middle position. It just stays in the 4Hi position all the time. Turn the knob on the dash and the other shift rod moves from 4Hi to 4Lo.

Or, as an "option" they just deleted the switch. It's not beyond Toyota to do that. My wife's van DRLs are a "dealer option" which was to insert a jumper in the fuse panel. That's it, no new wiring, no magic, just a jumper. I forgot what they wanted to charge for that. Imagine some dealer trying to sell you a 4x4 with an "optional" CDL for some price, the price of re-installing the switch...Doh!!

This might be a cheap mod if you really want the diff lock option but without some more research who knows.

Assuming somebody didn't just mess with the switch and remove/delete it, a rear locker would be mostly useless for you if you couldn't lock the center diff. With the center diff unlocked and a rear locker engaged, all the power could still be routed to one or both front wheels.

The electronic actuator t-case is pretty expensive if you look on ebay for the used stuff, but the FJ Cruiser manual t-case is ~$350 last I looked, you would just need to cut a hole in the floor to route the stick through. Though I'm not sure with this setup, you might need to swap to an ADD front diff as well to do it 'properly'.

Ok!! So here are some pics! And it looks like it in fact DOES have the actuator! Unless I’m an idiot.... so first as you can see no button to lock the CD...

And no center position on the 4wd knob...

But what appears to be an actuator case!

So how in the hell do I test it and get it “hooked” up?!

Wait, so you basically have an awd 4runner. It doesn't have true 4x4; or does but lacks the button to make it function. If it did that would mean you were in locked 4x4 at all times. If you pop the cover off where the cdl switch would be is there an extra plug?

So it does not have a cld button. But is in full time 4H just like all V8 4th Gen 4Runners and I can put it in 4L. It’s just lacking the button to lock the center diff. Apparently....

Happy to report that it LITERALLY was as easy as getting a switch on eBay for 20 dollars opening the dash and finding the obvious cable wrapped up with a factory cover and slapping it on!!

Tested it out and the cd locks up (you can hear the actuator engage!) even though it’s never been used in 14 years!

So weird that Toyota would sell it like that!
