ARB Skids

Hi guys,

In the armor sticky thread, it lists the ARB skids for the 4th gen 4Runner. However, whenever I look for them online they are always listed as 2010+.

Will they actually work on a 2003 v6?

This post makes me think so, but wanted to check with you guys.

I don't think so. At least I could not verify that to be true. There are a number of other skid plates out there for the 4th gen, so it really isn't an issue. I picked up RCI aluminum skids I'm very pleased with. I have an arb with the light skid that comes with the bunker to cover the gap between the bumper and factory skid. Picking up the RCI skids I was able to retain use of the little ARB filler plate for a clean and protected solution.
 
Hah I think that's the same guy.

I think I'm going to go for budbuilt skids. We'll see how well my V6 handles the weight.
 
I wouldn't get ARB skids. They are just barely thicker than the stock skids. One buddy of mine got them. And everytime he got on some rocks the cross member thingy would bend. Ended up making a new crossmember of thicker steel. Then he finally went with budbuilts.

Couple of other guys I now have them and are satisfied. But they do mostly expedition type wheeling, camping, fishing more gentle stuff.

I had the budbuilts. Sold them. Regretted it. But got some RCI second time around. Both are solid.

Same here. Made a stronger cross member, which just moved the failure to the bolts shearing off. They had some other flaws, too. Replaced with Buds.
 
t seems that ARB isn't really in the market of making heavy duty components for off-roading. If you look at their products, they seem to be geared to retaining factory crush-points, allowing the vehicle to collapse/break in engineered place. Which isn't a bad thing to be honest with you, but many people want skids because they are very sturdy and stand up to abuse; but as a result they do tie the frame together a lot more than I would imagine factory or ARB's thinner offerings doe.

What do you mean. That beige ARB folding chair is plenty heavy duty.

I agree. They make good front bumpers and air lockers. Nothing else sets them apart from all the others except their pricing often times. Except hopefully you can still count on them I hope to have legitimate properly tested and rating on their recovery gear.
 
I know this is an old thread but I'm digging through the armor threads and am curious about the ARB based mostly on price. They're not much thicker than stock but so far the stock ones have taken a beating. The idea isn't to crash over rocks but just add a buffer when I do, especially around the transmission/t-case.

Anyone have any more recent feedback on how these ARB models hold up? I'm sure the powder coating will disintegrate here in FL so I'll end up having to rattle-can them anyway. I'm mostly in the mud/sand/logs but go play in the rocks a few times per year. Right now I'm more concerned about some beefy sliders (destroyed the step bars last trip).
 
ARB skids are primarily designed to give an added layer of protection to the engine, transfer case and transmission, mostly from rocks and sticks getting kicked up on the trails. Stuff that could leave you stranded somewhere. They are not designed for providing a totally smooth underbody for serious sliding over rocks and boulders and what not.
