ARB winch Clearance

Hey Folks, I'm in the process fo building up my 98 4runner and have ordered an ARB winch bumper that should be here in the next day or so. After looking for a good deal on a winch for a while I picked up 2 warn XD9000i's for a song that are in good shape and just need a good cleaning. Trouble was I dind't realase this winch wouldn't fit into ARB. After doing some reading it looks like it might fit if mounted on its back or opening up the top of the bull bar.

Could some one snap a pick or measure the clearance between your ARB and the rad suppor area? If you have a winch installed could you measure the clearance behind it? Hoping there are a few extra inches in there.....other wise I'll sell these winched and pick on up that just drops in....

My real plan is to install one...sell one for a tidy profit and buy more parts....

ARB bull bar
Warn XD9000i
Sonoran steel 1.2a
Aussie rear locker
285 BFG AT's
cut rockers for sliders
45"x63" Alum roof rack

Later on:
custom or CBI rear bumper w/swingout
drawer storage inside

so you want to space that winch further back? sorry not gonna work with out some serious modifications, at which point you may as well buy a new bumper that will work with your winch. ARB bumpers will not work with integrated solenoid winches. so either sell your winch or sell your bumper of be prepared to start cutting up your bumper. the winch is too wide and too tall to fit in the ARB bumper

this is the issue i am having as we speak, i have a winch mounted in my arb but am trying to find a waterproof box that's 4x4x6 to fit the solenoid as if you dis assemble the solenoid box and look at the actual relay in there it's actually quite small, i have no freaking clue why they can't make these boxes 1/2 the size , if they made a form fit box for the winch controls i'd have 0 clearance issues but the box is like 2~3 x's the size of the actual solenoid.....it's very annoying....depending on what winch you have your soleniod should look like this

i'm simply dismantling the box putting the solenoid in another box wiring it in and then running the control wires to a switch in the cab....
from looking into this you might want to upgrade your winch solenoid anyways and pick a more modern one than comes with the XRC and go from there.

Yes if he already had a winch that had a separate solenoid it would work. The issue he is having is dimensionally the winch is too big. Its too tall, and too wide. The ARB bumper was never designed to run that winch. That winch is for use on a tube bumper or a mobile mount -ment to be exposed, that's why the solenoid is integrated in the housing, to seal it from dirt and moisture ect. Remote solenoids are for hidden winch applications where the bumper helps protect it from the elements...

oh ok i got you, yeah that winch probably would have worked on a tacoma though , as i think there is more clearance on the tacoma than the 4runner, my winch is literally on the rad support on the backside of it...from the extra pieces i had left over from the arb install it looked like there was an included winch plate, which makes me think the winch would have more room on a taco ...so with that said i don't think that it's the bumper was never designed for that sort of winch more like the bumper was never designed for our trucks and this is one of the issues that comes up from modding something to fit, lol......, either way your screwed...good luck and let us know if you find some sort of work around:surfer:

from the back of my winch cylinder to the rad support it's 1.25 inches.....

fyi i'm also hooking my solenoid up to one of these for 40 bucks.

wireless winch control, i plan on putting both in a box and locating somewhere next to the coolant overflow bottle.....there really isn't much room to install these things....

Well that doesn't look like it will be enough. The winch is a full 10" tall. I'll need to do some head scratching on this one. My best bet although dissapointing is to sell the winches and buy a replacement. My only other though is modifying the ARB to take the winch. I don't think I want to cute the rad support.

I'll wait until everthing arrives and take it from there....

if it were me i'd open up the top of the ARB. somewhat major modification but hey.
