are 4th gen as good as 3rd gen?

I've been looking for a decent 3rd edition with around 100k miles. I mainly going to use the car for golfing and weekend trips to the beach (not a daily driver, thank you metro).

What is your opinion on this one? Should I stick to the 3rd Gen?

We are selling our 2002 Toyota 4Runner SR5. We purchased it new in 2002 and have never had any problems. It has almost 92,000 miles and has been regularly serviced.

Some of the details are:
Exterior color: Millennium Silver
Interior: Leather - Oak color
Engine: 3.4L V6 DOHC EFI Engine
Transmission: 4-speed automatic ECT
Additional options include: rear heater w/dual cupholders, leather package, large painted overfenders, 16" aluminum wheels, power tilt/slide moonroof, convenience package with towing hitch, running boards and wheel locks.

Feel free to contact me if you have additional questions or would like to take a look at it. It's a great vehicle but we needed something with third row seating. The first $8,500 gets it.

I have had both generations now for many years and I keep exact records, including mileage. The third generation can get better mileage on the highway, but overall the 4th generation with the V6 gets better mileage overall, .46 miles to the gallon, over the long haul.

My son now has the 3rd generation, he lives with us, so I still keep tracks on this 4Runner. I still drive it a few times, especially when he asks me to fill it up.

After driving both for years, by far my favorite with me and my family is the third generation model. More fun to drive and it feels better put together.

With 210,000 miles the 2001 3rd generation, besides tuneups brakes and tires, has needed 1.) An O2 sensor, 2.) A new drive shaft 3.) 2 batteries, 4.) new head gaskets, I changed the shocks at this time too, I changed the timing belt at 150,000 which could be considered maintenance, but the 4th generation has a timing chain and does not need one.

With 180,000 miles the 2004 4th generation, besides tune ups, tires and brakes, 1.) one battery, 2.) fan motor for the vent, the pump for the windshield wiper is currently not working.

Notice none of them needed starters, alternators, A/C repairs, etc. The 4th generation mileage stays more constant with city and highway, while the 3rd generation shines on the highway.

These results are in no way an controlled environment. I tow with both vehicles with many trailers, I bought the 4th generation used with 42,000 miles. I would have to say overall, my heart is with the 3rd, but the 4th has had better repair record and I hate to admit it a better drive.

I owned a 2008 V6 SE which I bought new and then owned a 99 SR5 4x4 and lifted it and now own a 2006 V8 4x4 SE. The 3rd Gen definitely felt more truck like, but it was gutless and couldn't tow all that well. It was also kind of small for my liking. The 4th Gen is the perfect size for me and I LOVE the V8. The interior is also a bit of an upgrade from the 3rd Gen which started to show it's age, but I didn't mind it...it's just the 4th Gen's is nicer. But it's all in what you are looking for and to be honest you can't go wrong with either one. They are both solid platforms and if you keep up on maintenance will last a LONG LONG time.

I agree with your assessment, but lets face it, the newest 3rd generation is now 15 years old and the oldest ones are now 21 years old. they are getting a little long in the tooth, so to speak. I would judge these 4 Runners by the shape they are in and not by the year.
