Are 85' 4runners Solid Axle? If so what lift kit?

I've been told by fellow 4x4'n friends to go find an 85' 4runner. I'm not sure if they're soild axle so I'm asking you folks. If they are, what type of lift kits are out there for them? I'm looking to run 35x10.5x__? Reasoning for the underscore is I'm not familar with toyota bolt patterns/rim sizing. I'm a jeeper transforing into a yota boy. Any help is greatly appreciated. If you got links of vendors for me to look at that will help tooo. these are the ones I found so far.

79-85 trucks and 84-85 4Runners were solid axle.

Wheel pattern is 6 on 5.5

Also check out Trail-Gear and Sky Manufacturing.

For 35's 5-6", or 4" plus some trimming, or plus a 2" BL, lots of other choices.

You should also plan on converting to a cross-over steering setup.
All of the above vendors carry it also.

i was thinking of doing a spring over axle and the steering. Alot of my friends run 8" lifts and run 36" boggers. Is that adiquit?
 
So I cannot decide about the Marlin Crawler or All Pro lift kit. Both look almost the same and both have the high steer. Can you give me some advice between the two? This is going to be on a 85' 4Runner and I want to fit 34x10.5" LTB's with room for flex. These are other items that I want to include with my build.

- Marlin Crawler Turtle Tuff Crossmember
- Trail Gear Inc. Heavy Duty Longfield Front Axles: (30 Spline Axle Kit)

These are items I'm unaware about... and need someone with knowledge to fill me in abit.

1. Front Locking Hubs
2. Driveshaft
3. Gears
4. Rear Axles
5. Wheel Spacers?

Toyotas are spring over.

You don't need 8" of lift for 36" tires.

Bud Built x-member/skid plate can't be beat.
Longfields are nice for rock crawling trucks, may be overkill for other wheeling.

1. Truck should have locking hubs stock from factory.
2. You need them.
3. Them too. Ratio depends on tire size, for 34's 4.88 is appropriate.
4. You should already have one.
5. Hard to say.

Did you peruse for five seconds or ten? Lots of folks make lift springs for pre-86 trucks. Trail-Gear, All Pro, and Old Man Emu are the big ones.
 
What are you wanting to do with it?

You can fit 35's with just a sawzall if that's your thing.

4" spring lift front/blocks rear can be had cheap, don't need to convert to high steer necessarily, but with that size lift would at least need a drop drag link.

Really depends on what you want out of it. If you want a mostly street truck on 35's you don't need high steer. If you are building a rock/wheeling rig then different story. High steer is needed for a long travel front suspension.

Also, best of luck finding an '85 that isn't either A) trashed, or B) really expensive.

Let us know more about your goals and that might help some of these questions.
 
A good buddy of mine put a 4" Pro Comp on his abd it rides pretty good. He just does camping and trail riding with me, not rocl crawling by any mean. It depends on how you use the truck though. Good luck!

I'd love to have a '85 Runner in a heartbeat. I'm restoring a '85 4x4 extracab pickup right now. Very happy about it! :)
 
The higher you got the easier you roll!

Remember the trick is to keep it low with large tires and cut away the metal you don't want rubbing. If you want a show truck and don't want to cut the metal then you don't need more then a 3" lift to fit 35"

You would be surprised what you can go through with the right gears and tires that are fit for the appropriate terrain!

OME doesnt look like they offer anything anymore from what I could find.

I found a link for rough/country/ tough country...I need full replacement stuff no addaleaf...

Procomp was literally all I fouund...but the reviews are less than glowing.

I really didnt want to fab stuff like the majority of links lead me too. Perhaps next time you'd kindly offer a link instead of sarcasm...I cant replace broken parts with it. :cool:


For that matter, you should try locating exhaust midpipe for an automatic for 85 22re....I've resorted to trying to bend 5speed bits to fit. It;s not working so hot either.

That's what it's looking like I'm going to order. I was looking more for 2-3". I wont run over 33's I'm guessing. (Famous Last words)

I have the girl already. She a bit rusty to be a show queen. I plan on roadtrippn/wheeling places that my 05 likes to "Light up and buzz" going over...Nothing too serious. Just some runs from W.Tx. into nm/co/ok. I had a p/u back in college that I literally couldnt kill. This time around I went 4runner so the dogs could come along in relative comfort. :)

I look forward to the advice guys and posting more as soon as I figure what hurdle lets me put up pics.

Most guys that upgrade their suspension are willing to do a little fab. If you want a completely bolt on lift, OME is what you want. Not sure what you're seeing that makes you think they don't make springs for the '85 anymore, here's one link.

Cruiser Outfitters

Toytec and Wheelers Offroad don't list anything for the '85 4Runner on their websites but I know they are OME dealers and can get you set up too. I recommend Cruiser Outfitters for anything OME/Dakar though, the owner Kurt has forgotten more than the rest of us will ever likely know about old Toyotas and OME is about half of what he does so he knows the product line well.

Procomp is a bro lift, I'd stay away. And if you need exhaust bent up, just hit a muffler shop. I've never seen the point in buying pre-bent sections, local is always cheaper.

Ome makes stuff, according to the website you posted and others I've seen, for 86 and up. I live in bfe w. tx. The nearest brick/mortar store is 4wheel parts in ElPaso. I called, nada for the solid axle runners. I can't even find a decent junkyard to hitup man. I've been bugging the devil out of my DFW buds to snag something on one of their runs thru. (But they're jeep guys so they've little interest in yota stuff)

Same answer for the pipe benders. I live in bfe. Anything toyota around here gets snagged up and sent south of the border...I can't even find leaf springs. ( The front are broken and the rear look like they're next)

The link I posted is for front and rear leaf springs. '86 and up don't have front leaf springs.

But hey, you already know what you know so don't let me get in the way.
