Are all 3rd Gen stereo head units interchangeable?

Does anyone know if I can put a '01 stereo in my '97 without having to mess with splicing wires together? My CD player broke so all I have is the radio and I can get the '01 stereo for almost nothing.

You can have my Alpine external 6cd changer if you want.
 
Dude, that's really cool of you to offer. I'm wondering how it plugs into my HU? My '97 doesn't have an aux input (at least not that I know of).

I'll take a pic, i sorta never uninstalled it, it is mounted in my car but no hooked up cause i dont have the port for it anymore.

Every Toyota I've ever switched radios in uses the same set of plugs. There are 2, one for the rear speakers and a larger one for the front speakers/power/power antenna/light dimmer etc. Then of course there is the antenna plug also.

That being said, I noticed when I had the dash apart on my 3rd gen 4Runner that there are 2 antenna plugs. One is the standard size Motorola plug and there is a smaller version of the Motorola plug.

The smaller one is for the AM antenna that is in the rear passenger side window (looks like a window defroster).

Other than that, the plugs on the radios were the same in our '87 Tercel, 89 Land Cruiser, 91 Celica, 01 Tacoma, 04 Tundra and 98 4runner!

One other thing to mention is that on my 4Runner there is a factory amplifier in dash. To install an aftermarket radio you have to bypass the amp but the plugs are the ones that fit into the factory radios.

One more other thing! You can always go to any car stereo install shop and get a wiring kit that you splice to your aftermarket stereo and then plug into the factory connections in the vehicle. That way you don’t have to butcher the factory wiring.

Thank you Skybill, that's what I was hoping. It helps to know that all of your stereos in all those different Toyotas had all the same connectors, I'm sure the 3rd gens didn't change either since your '01 Taco and '04 Tundra are the same.
 
ill take that alpine 6cd changer off of u johnd90 is brain doesnt want it... my alpine needs a changer bc the cd port doesnt always play the cds. It plays new cds for about a week then doesnt work.
 
It sounds like you could use the 6-disc more than me so you can go ahead and take it xskydivingdudex. I need a new head unit regardless of the CD changer so it's no big deal to me. The reason I want a factory HU is because the CD player in my old one (before it broke) was actually really good about not skipping compared to most aftermarket stereos - and I can get one for $10. Thanks for the offer John, very cool of you!
 
You can have my Pioneer head unit Only problem is it turns down randomly, you have to fidget with the volume sort of often. Just pick up shipping and its yours....oh and you need the pioneer iso mounts or whatever, 2 cheap metal plates that mount it to your console...probably from Best Buy for no more than ten bucks I'd hope. Just got this guy in yesterday :)

Congrats on the new stereo Wes! Looks like a nice one! Dude, I just bought the '01 HU this morning before I read your post so I won't be needing your Pioneer, but THANK YOU!!!! This forum is the best, so many people here are beyond cool! Maybe someone else on here could use the Pioneer though??

Hey what kind of head unit did you get? I've been searching around for a double din touch screen unit like this for a relatively decent price.

im pretty sure the one that miller got was a Pioneer AVH-P3200DVD. He posted somewhere (cant remember right now) that he purchased it with the dvd mod for appx. 425. U can find the unit i said above on amazon for $324 and u can just wire it in urself with a relay to get the "dvd while driving" mod.
