Are my brakes working correctly?

I was heading down hill to make a left turn at a stop light. I had my foot on the brakes as I slowed just before making the turn and I hit some rough pavement. At first the the brake peddle felt normal then it felt like it had had no resistance, then the truck surged forward for about 2 seconds then the brakes engaged very hard. Hard enough were everyone jolted forward a bit but not so hard to cause any skidding. Is this normal?

The rough pavement probably caused the wheels to loose traction. What you felt was the ABS releasing the wheels to allow them to spin and allow you to steer. Normally it's not as agressive as you described but once in a while you catch the conditions just right and it'll startle you. Kind of a perfect storm scenario... I've used the ABS on mine several times and only encountered what you described once. It involved washboard on one side of the vehicle on a dirt road...

Just keep steady pressure on the brake pedal and steer as necessary.

ABS can be a weird animal.

Each manufacturer is different, and the first time you experience it working it usually startles you.

Big Brother is always watching over you !

Yes the brakes on these T4R's can be quite startling and unsettling as well. Depending on ABS action and even the Brake Assist feature these operations seem a bit crude compared to some other cars I've driven.

My 05 pulled the same crap the other day while driving around town. It had snowed the night before and the plows were a tad behind. This leaves plenty of slush on the road but nothing to be alarmed at.
I was heading uphill and had to brake relatively short. Nothing out of the ordinary. The next two or three times I pressed on the brake, it damn near locked up. It was like the clamping force was exponential.
I figured it to be a safety feature of sorts but haven't forgotten about it. Needless to say, it was unexpected.
