Are there different types running boards?

Howdy all,

Looking at the great pics people have posted I noticed there appears to be 2 different types of running boards on 03/04 4Runners

First, there is the type I've seen on 4Runner here in California. You can see them in the pictures posted by jgrimball.

The second type, which looks much better in my opinion can be seen on the pics posted by b1rd0g.

Can someone tell me what the deal is? Are these running boards different because of the region/state the vehicle is sold in? Is there any way to get a specific type of running board in a region/state that doesn't seem to get them?

I believe the Limited has lighted running boards, the SR5 and Sport unlighted. Plus, early (pre-Appearance Package) SR5's did not come with running boards, so some have port install versions.

I know the Limited has lighted running boards but they still look just like the ones on the SR5 & Sport. These are the ones with one solid "smooth" step. The ones on b1rd0g's 4Runner (and others I've seen pictures of) has 2 flattened areas in front of each door.

My question is are these OEM or are they aftermarket ones?
