I agree with the statement made earlier in this post that the word "redneck" is derogatory to our race. It is my opinion that the general public most associates this term with ignorant, illiterate, white men and woman. As I know such people do exist, I still believe that using this word is SIMILAR to using the "N" word. I too grew up aroud farmland and I like to drive my 4 wheeler in the mud. While in high school, I hung tobacco and worked on a "working farm." When I was a senior in highschool, I participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). Allthough I participated in the previously mentioned activities, does not make me a redneck or country. It simply means that I enjoy doing those particular activites. We do not have to place a title over our heads to illustrate what we love in life.
I will close with this.
Confederate flags are not cool. The phrase "Get R Done" is not a "cool" decal to put on your vehicle. "Mud flap girls" are inapropriate magnets. Finally, truck nuts are offensive and is embarrassing when your child asks what they are.

While I appreciate your point of view I don't agree. Some people do think of a "redneck" as exactly what you describe and some think that a redneck is just an uneducated person from the country. Look, there are many things I don't like or agree with either. Just because I don't like or agree with it does not make it wrong. I'm quite sure what you think is right is different than what I think. You can voice your opinion all day long - IT IS YOUR RIGHT. Now, to get someone to agree with you is a different story. The slippery slope comment is just that: In your eyes "rebel flags" and "git er done" and "truck nuts" and "redneck" moniker is wrong. If you had your way you would ban them. I get it. However, what if something you personally thought was right was taken away just because someone else thought it was wrong. Huh? That is what I mean. I don't like the nuts nor do I have them on my vehicle. When I see them I just shake my head in wonderment. I do not agree but I know why people do it. It is to make them, in their eyes, think their truck is macho and manly. If you really care about these things you should run for a public office and try to get a law against it. Telling your OPINION on an internet forum is not going to change anything. To each their own.

I agree with most of that, but I'll be keeping my Confederate Flag as long as I live.

Oh, the "Flag" thing.....
Personally, I can understand that it CAN represent a certain connection to heritage and tradition, however one must realize that the most outstanding of those traditions is Slavery and Racism.
We all have the right to let everyone know how Ignorant we are by flying whatever flag we choose.
In Germany they have a flag that is "Part of their history" as well....

Though I can see where some of these arguments are partially relevant to the original question, I hardly think the OP intended to open a political can of worms. Again, I think the question had more to do with semantics than historical prejudice and topics that turned from disagreements into wars.
These days freedom of speech can be boiled down to one person's right to be as stupid as they want & get away with it. I'm sure most people do what they do because they think they are right, but who is ultimately right. I think the guy that flicks a cigarette but on the ground is wrong, but so is the guys that picks it up & hands it to him. It's just an a$$h@le of a different stench. Who do you think died and made you the governor of the EPA? Again, I agree with you fundamentally that they shouldn't litter & personally choose not to, but I'm not so pretentious to believe that everyone should think & act as I do.
I guess the point is live & let live because you can spend your whole life trying to correct things/people that you think are wrong or you can accept that, as Americans, we have the right to be as wrong as we want and there is nothing you can do about it, so stop sticking your nose in everyone else's business & focus on living your own life.
Again, its my right as an American to be as "stupid" as I want, so if you disagree, that's fine, just know trying to change me is much more difficult than learning to accept our differences

Why not have at least a little bit of pride about your community and where you come from? So you will let your childeren watch you do NOTHING about someone doing somehting wrong, such as flipping a cigarette butt on the ground. Thats sad. Its sad that you would let your neighbor fly a racist flag and NOT say anything about it. Its disrespectful. Again, no one is saying take their rights away. Why cant they fly it in the privacy of their home?

This is relevant to the op. Original post was asking if we were rednecks. My response was in defense to our race. I am sorry that is what the majority of the public think when they reference the word "redneck"
