So i mentioned it in a thread a week or two ago that i got auto running boards and was going to put on the OEM splash guards / mud flaps. I have searched the boards and have not found anyone that has ever done the work to make them fit. Everyone just says they wont fit, and as soon as i looked at the steps i knew they would be easy to mod and make the mud flaps fit.
So the reason the mud flaps wont fit is because the running board is so long it goes the full length of the side skirt or lower rocker panel. The OEM mud flap recesses back over the lower rocker panel about 0.800" or just a little over 3/4" which means the mud flap interferes with the running board and would hit. I saw a guy who posted pictures where he cut the mud flap with a dremel or grinder to make the mud flap fit over the step, but the hole he had to cut was right thru the flap and you could see from the front to the back.
I saw the step and knew these were AMP extruded steps and with the end caps being screwed on, you could easily pull the caps off, cut the step down, and reinstall the cap. Sure'nuff it was easy and well worth the time.
First thing to do is pull the screws out of the end cap, there are two, just screw them out and pull the end cap off. My drivers end cap needed a little nudge from a small flat head screwdriver, the passengers end cap slipped out by hand.
Next would be to minimize the possibility that you mess the finish up on the board, put masking tape or painters tape on the board to cover the work area. These boards have a crinkle powder finish that gives them texture but it will wear and scratch so i used painters tape. Since the board only needed 0.800" cut off, i went about 0.900" but honestly you could easily take a solid 1" off the board and everything work and look perfect.
Cut the board with a sawzall, grinder, air body saw, or take a file and whittle on it all afternoon, whatever you have just go to town and cut the board down to the line.
Once you get the board cut down and the inside of the extruded board de-burred you can mark your holes to re-drill, drill them, and push the end cap back in and tighten the screws back up.
Once you have the end cap back on and tightened down you can install the OEM or similar style mud flaps / splash guards.
