Hi guys did some maintenance on my 99. Everything was going smoothly, I put amsoil motor oil then a new koyo radiator, red oem coolant, oem hoses and oem tsat. Well the tsat scared the hell out of me. I noticed it ran a ok for the firts couple minutes, so I took it out for a test drive within a minutes she got warmer, needle got just above halfway mark when cel came on. I was only a block away, I grab the lower hoses, barely warm. It was getting dark soon so I put in the old tsat with the new oem gasket.VOILA. No problems. I read on yota tech for the jiggle valve to be 15 degrees to the right of the 12 oclock postion. And now i read on here for it to be at 6 oclock. Also the new oem looks beefier than what I pulled out. The old seems to have more open clearance than the new one. Anybody have a bad oem tstat?

There was a thread similar to yours from a guy in Colorado (wolf avatar)stating that his new T-stat from Toyota ran hot so he put in the old one and everything was gravy.

Test them in pans with thermometers and see which one opens up wider at 180F.

I wonder if Toyota has gone to another manufacturer for their Tstats now?

When I got my new OEM Tstat from the dealer two years ago, it did not look like what you received but just like the one that came with the car.

Did you get the new one from the dealer? If so, if possible, take the new one back with the old one and show them what Tstat looks like.

Yes its from dealer, thats where I also bought hoses, plugs, coolant etc. I cant the one that came out because I tossed it back in. Did yours look like the that I put back in. I just put the new gasket on the old t stat and dumped it in,

Kuzeh, who makes the OEM tstat, is a japan based company, and makes its products there or in Indonesia I guess, not in the USA, as is stamped on the replacement tstat. My replacement liked like your original one.

If you have another Toy dealer in your area, go there. Of all the people I have ever dealt with at the parts counter at dealerships, only one guy from Acura was worth his salt. The rest are on cloud nine, in a fog, or in a state of perpetual stupidity.

Other Thermostats?

I just came across this thread, but had posted a question about a thermostat in another post.

I am updating my cooling system next week (ordering parts today). i was planning on just getting an aftermarket thermsostat (probably stant) based on local availablity.

Has anyone had problems with these? I think I will stay away from the dealer for the thermostat (among other things!)

I'm still running the original, I havent returned the bad t stat. I might just go with stant. I put a stant in my lexus sc300 and all was good.
