ArterMarket Air Intake system?

I'm wondering if anybody has replaced their stock air intake system with one of those k&N kits?

I'm thinking of doing so to help out with mileage and get some HP boost.

Does anybody know of a cheaper better kit?

Also, i assume it is easy to install... but if anybody has any tips, i'd appreciate those as well.

Will there be any tuning necessary or will the computer compensate?

This would be for a 2006 4Runner.

Not much of a power guain from what i can tell, i have a 2003 V8 and this was the 1st mod i did to mine, a K&N CAI.

very basic and easy to install, but i thought the price was a bit high, also you are paying for the name brad S**T and the respect it gets....

but if you can afford it, get it! if not there are cheeper solutions with "air raid" and alot of others

nothing to change with computer just add it and lissen for the great groulling sound it makes around 2,800 RPM

but i think my gas millage droped a bit since i like to gun it more to hear the sound...

I got a Volant CAI and I dont have any regrets. Some feel it isnt worth the money, some dont like the sound....... I feel it is cheap and cant even notice the sound anymore.
Anything to help performance....

I just installed one a week ago - got it used from a member here. No sure if I would have paid full price for a new one but I really do like it. It sounds great and is a little more responsive. I seem to be getting somewhere between 1 - 1.5 MPG more after installing it but it's only been one tank of gas so far.

edit: I should have specified, I installed a K&N.

Whoah. $380 for a Volant vs a $270 K&N... yikes.
maybe i'll wait a bit....unless somebody else has one they want to sell for cheap..

It's a mod to make the owner feel better since it's only a few ponies for your $270 and the gas mileage increase is so negligible it's not a reason to buy one.

I did the deckplate on my 3rd gen and gott the same HP and same questionable MPG gain for almost free.

Hey I bought a TRD cold air Intake from toyota parts people.

$310.00 It makes it sound better and twice as better if you add an exhaust. Noticable throttle response and better gas milage. It also looks so much better then all the other ones out there. I highly recomend it. But if you get it i would recomend getting an exhaust in the future to help with the back pressure. If you wat to know more or need a pic or somthing let me know. Doing search for "Deckplate Mod". Hmmmmm...sounds like Ruffian may be getting another change.

Oh ok after I did the search, it appears that this is a 3rd Gen mod. Nothing mentioned that I can do this with my 4th gen. I'm not a mechanic, so I'd just be following what others have done. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just curious as to why Toyota or other manufacturers do not equip their vehicles with these types of air intakes in the first place? Wouldn't you think this would help manufactures show higher epa mpg estimates? I'm not against them, just thought it's odd they don't equip them.. not even a sport model.

FWIW, everything Ive EVER read on doing the deckplate in a 4th gen says its worthless. but i guess people say that about aftermarket air intake systms and i have one of those so.....

It mostly boils down to cost and they need to be idiot proof for the general buyer and an open air element isn't a good idea for the masses.

Most mileage gains are negligible so it really wouldn't help EPA estimates.

Hmmm, well then nevermind. I'm not a mechanic by any means, so if others have done this with no positive results, then I'm not going to jump into that same creek.

I have the TRD CAI and TRD Cat Back. I get around 19mpg in the city. It sounds fantastic, sometimes a little too much vibration at high RPM but it seems to be getting better as it gets used. I'd recommend it.
