There are several here who think their "special" rare 4Runners are going to be worth more than a standard 4Runner and they need to read the article. There needs to be a link to an article about "Mods increasing my 4Runner's value." The truth is this: Do it yourself mods only increase your 4Runner's value in your own mind. You are not Icon nor are you AEV or any big name mod house. Most of the time your mods will HURT your resale and taking it back to stock will increase the vehicle's value. The truth hurts.

I see this a lot in the motorcycle world. I ride Harley's, and people love to "customize"/ mod their Harleys. People think their bike or car is worth all $3k they spent in aftermarket parts on a $5k vehicle. Give me an unmolested engine/ vehicle any day. I will do my own modifications and drive it until there is exactly no value left.

My 2000 Echo was rare and valuable. But not valuable because it was rare. Rare because nobody wanted them in the first place, it held its value because it was a sub $10k used car that would last 300,000+ miles and get 40mpg until the wheels fell off.

You want to see really bad, cruise on over to NASIOC and check out the classifieds there. People think their clapped out Subarus are more than just a squeaking, rattling, tarted up econobox. Admittedly, it worked out in my favor when I sold my Baja Turbo 5spd, but it's just awful.
Back in 2008 dealers were having to discount the new STi to as low as $28k just to get them off the lots, then 5 years later people were trying to sell them for $35k with 60k miles.

Great article. I try not to get wrapped up in the re-sale value stuff because honestly I'm just getting the car because I like cars, not because I am looking to buy an investment. Cars are usually terrible investments for casual buyers, and the people I know that actually make money by buying and selling cars really have to work hard at it and always end up losing money along the way (and then getting it back).
Our 4Runners are special, and I think these things do have a higher than average resale value regardless of mods. It all depends on where you are though, and the West seems to have a high price premium on Tacoma's and 4Runners. Go to Denver's Craigslist every once in a while and you'll see stock and modded 4Runners going for $1-$3k more than they would elsewhere, and the listings get deleted pretty quickly (usually indicating a sale).
None of that matters to me anyway since I'm keeping mine until she just can't go anymore.
