Asian Frat racist?

Theres a story that has been developing into national news about one of the asian frats at my campus (UCI) that is apparently racist.

I think there is a pussification of the country and everyone needs to lighten up. But this frat is also pretty stupid for doing this, even if it was just for fun.

I do agree that we are getting a little too PC for our own good, but I think that video does cross the line. You can say they didn't know the history of it, but that makes it a little worse. There are specific reasons why something as specific as that would offend people and it should.

I agree with Hepar. I can't call it racist without knowing exactly what those kids were thinking, but it's certainly terribly insensitive.

Well technically it isnt an asian-only frat.. more of a its mostly a subtype of the asian male community that i, like most people, have a certain opinion about. This is said me being asian-american as well..

This type of crap has been done by the same frat in the past and they only recently were allowed back to campus following some g** hazing incidents that happened in the past. Seems they didn't learn their lesson.

i've spend most of my life in asia so you don't have to school me in asian geography. all of asia are racist thur media stereotype because the lack of racial diversity in there.

Ok?since you were in ASIA for most of your life,did you meet all of them and what parts of Asia?I was born and raised in an Asian country prior to me setting foot in this great country.spending most of your so called life in Asia doesn't give you an ounce of credibilty to make a statement about all Asians are racist.the term racist never came to my mind or heard of till i set foot in America.maybe it's all in your head partner.just my 2 cents.:canada::kiss:

I try very hard to not be construed as racist when I discuss touchy subjects, but I can't for the life of me understand why blackface is such a touchy thing. If you are portraying a specific character, looking like them is a big factor. I didn't go bat-sht-crazy when the Wayans came out with White Chicks. I just don't get it.

Now if you are doing it to intentionally be insensitive and racist, then yeah it's not acceptable. Otherwise, lighten up people (no pun intended).

Because the intentions weren't imitation historically. They were to make fun of and were successful in spreading stereotypes as well as racists images throughout the world. That is why I said it is important to know the history behind it. If you were to look at the surface of the video, yes they probably have no intentions of being rude or insensitive. But, we need to damn well be aware of our history and know that it is not ok to continue the behavior. Otherwise we will get to a point where it is suddenly ok again.

Blackface isn't about just portraying a black person. Historically, blackface itself was a racist act, in that blacks weren't allowed on stage. Additionally, portrayal of blacks on the stage was almost never complimentary, so blackface itself is associated with mocking and denigrating black people, in the same way that the swastika is associated with killing Jews and Gypsies. It's not that a white guy or asian pretending to be black is racist, it's that specifically putting on blackface in order to pretend to be black is on the same order of offensiveness as wearing a swastika on an armband to a "Children of Holocaust Survivors" meeting. You can argue that you don't mean to be offensive all you want, but actions speak louder than words.

Those kids could have portrayed the "JayZ" character in a lot of different ways that would have gotten the point across, without choosing a way guaranteed to offend.

That because whenever someone makes fun of white people, it is comedy. But, when white people do anything that is even slightly insensitive (in the name of humor) people scream racism. Do us all a favor and put that card back in the deck.
I am sick to death over all this political correctness. When I see this video I don't think poorly of asians or feel sorry for blacks, I simply think, "stupid kids." It is what it is people need to stop blowing everything out of proportion and get real. Did they really HURT anyone with this video? No, absolutely not. Was it insensitive? Sure, but I personally don't care.

Its really not that hard to offend people that go out of their way to be offended. So many people these days (of all races and religions, sexual orientations) go sooooo far out of their way to be offended that it is sterilizing society. Before you know it, there won't be any individualism anymore, just slightly different versions of the same old thing. People should be allowed to express themselves artistically, comically and however else they want without prejudice. Of course, those that choose to express themselves that way should also not get offended when their expression offends someone else... Its a vicious circle of people being pu$$ies really

So because of historical intention, any form of modern use is unacceptable? I guess I shouldn't buy any land in the southern states any time soon...

ETA - And do you think it's okay for actors to don a swastika in movies? I don't see the Jewish community up in arms about that. Maybe that was just a bad analogy?

I think you are missing the reverse. The problem is that there is an inherent assumption that certain people are racists (which in itself is racist). Are white people out to get blacks simply because of past events? Are all Germans out to get Jews simply because of the holocaust? Are Brits out to get Americans because we basically stole an entire continent from them and slaughtered their military? Are the Persians (Iranians?) out to get everyone because of previous world domination? Come on, at some point we have to move on. If we keep dwelling on the past we will never move forward. Life is too short to tip toe around.

that's what im saying, in asia there is no racism because everyone is the same race, but thur media and rumors putting stereotype in people's head thus creating racism. It's like most americans are racist towards middle easterners because of media, but if you actually went to middle east and spend some time there you'll find most people are super nice.
