I sat in a Tacoma 4r DC Sport short box , I really liked it , nice room inside , nice stance and width . Kinda thought it was pretty nice , I hope the new 4runner has that set up , because I was diggin it. I actually went to look into one because I need to get a truck mid size truck for business of mine.. The smaller box is just fine for what it's uses are for .

The current gen Tacoma (2005+) is the same width as the 4th gen 4Runner, making it a little bigger than the previous gen of the Tacoma.
I think the 4Runner is a little nicer inside. I don't like the way the center of the dash is trimmed out in the Tacoma (the big silver blob, as I call it), but that's my only complaint about it. I agree that the Tacoma is a nice truck overall, and it's what I'd buy if I wanted a new pickup.

I've actually been looking at the Tacoma's for a week or so now. It is so nice to have that bed in the back to throw all your junk in. Plus it can carry my mountain bikes with ease. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have a multi-mode 4WD. But at least it has a rear locker!

They are all Tacomas.... but the prerunner version has the same lift as a 4x4 but its only 2wd.
I just sold my 2000 taco 4x4 extcab so I could buy a 4runner.... I almost bought the four door taco 4x4. but decided I wanted the more interrior space of the runner. (this is my first non-truck purchase EVER!!!)
By the way... I LOVED MY TRUCK.... I would never buy anything else but a toyota in the truck category.... I'm hoping my 4runner treats me the same. The tacoma will run forever. It does lack a little in the interrior... I wish toyota would be a little more competitve on this, but all in all nothing beats it. I think you will love the new tacoma with its larger size.... and the prerunner is not a bad option for a few bucks less. I had a 4x4, but was able to go a lot of places without even turning it on.

I actually traded my 06 Tacoma Prerunner DC LB on my current 07 4 Runner Sport. It was a nice truck. Held it's value that's for sure. I got out of it without being negative which is a plus after driving it for a year. The only real thing that bugged me was my daughter's car seat was just not quite far enough back in the DC. Her feet and legs were up against the passenger seat and I had to move it pretty far up which made someone sitting in front tight. I decided to go back to an SUV (my 3rd 4 Runner) and everything is good again. Plus the normal complaints of the new modern era Toyota's. The plastic interior seemed to really be scratch prone, overall plasticy feel, the dash board was a little more flashy, and it did have it's rattles or two. This coming from a T100 which was built like a tank. Don't get me wrong the new Tacoma's are very nice compared to the other similarly priced trucks, it just didn't work for me.

Previously, I like the Tacoma (got 2005 DC PreRunner with the Off-Road package) interior more. It's more clean and less clunky looking than the 4Runner's, especially the door panels much better design on the the Taco. Right now, it's a toss up between either interior since I've gotten use to the 4Runner's.
Overall, you can't go wrong with the Tacoma. I wouldn't pick one over the other. The Tacoma has better utility, but the 4Runner is more refined and has a better 4WD system (full time over the Taco's part time system). I love both of them equally.

The Prerunner also comes with an (optional I believe) rear locker.

LSD and locker are not the same. The locker is only available with the TRD Off-Road package from the factory. I can't speak for the previous gen, but 2005 til now, the ONLY way to get the e-locker is with the Off-Road package. If the dealer or distributor is installing it at port then that's probably what you saw.

If you go to "Build and Price", it seems to only offer VSC on the PreRunner (which is 2WD). That isn't definitive, but that means that the configs coming to my region right now don't combine 4x4 with VSC.

Sport Edition (off road) comes with LSD 4x4.
Off road edition comes with rear locker 4x4.
VSC and Atrac would be sweet and agreed in a pick up , empty box it would be great.
Both trucks have the same suspension , just cosmetic differences and available rear locker.
