AT High2/4x4 does not work low 4x4 works?

So I have a 1986 t4r with some tranny problems, looked at other threads couldnt find one about this. In High 2x4 or 4x4, when shifting through gears on AT it only moves slightly as if someone bumped it but will not go engine revs up but nothing. in low 4x4 it really wants to go (lurches to take off) maybe because engine is running little high rpm. So I have checked the fluid, little burnt not too bad, made sure that the linkage is not broken it all moves correctly. Also it should be noted that this was towed a distance with all 4 wheels turning and the driveline in :( I know it might be bad but I had no choice could this be the problem, it had a little difficulty shifting into O/D before I towed it but I figured it was the temp sensor going out. REally need help on this one! I will post pictures of all the work I do to fix it but where do I start?

One other thing (probably unrelated) that has happened is I tore out the A/C radiator, the cruise control box under the hood?(could messing with cruise control effect the transmission?), and some electrical cords that did not connect to anything at one end(I assume the previous owners mess.)

Oops.

I burned up something in my old '86 doing this. Yours might have already been on the way out, but you definitely accelerated the process.

Bummer

Did you even find out what it was that your burned up? is it the bearings? I am just wondering if I should just tear out the tranny and start rebuilding it or if there is a possibility that its just a shift solenoid (idk where or what that is though.) Is there a way to test a few things before I go ahead and just try to replace or rebuild it?

I didn't even try, I paid a guy to throw a junkyard transmission/tcase in.

If you've got just a tiny bit of go when you're in a forward gear, then your solenoids are working. I think your trouble is bigger than that.

Does the AT have an actual clutch? I though the viscous coupling replaced that, but I don't really know anything about them.

They have clutches for first second 3 rd and reverse. I'm not totally sure what they look like but they do wear out like a normal clutch but you have to be a transmition builder or know your way around them to do anything about it. This is why I don't like automatics.

Bum deal

Ok well I guess I will have to tear the whole thing out and start rebuilding it, do they make clutch kits for AT? I might try to find a junkyard around here with one I can snag. Dam.. Thanks for all the posts!!

?

541joseph thats a bummer to hear, when you say burnt toast do you mean like the tranny is beyond repair, or can I rebuild it?

It needs to be rebuilt but it's not an easy thing to do and there are a lot of special tools needed. I'd just go get one from a junk yard and put it in

I always use edge racing converters and alto clutch packs, the tc is a huge issue for the autos get a new custom cut to match your plans for the truck. This will reduce heat build up and prolong tranny life ,also consider adding another tranny cooler . Take your time and get the book from edge or someone else and you can do it ,don't let everyone's fear of autos be yours . These trannys can be built to run nice ,my last one is pushing an 85 runner on tons and 39.5's at 70 easy !

hmmm

Well I will probably buy a junkyard one just to get'er up and going then rebuild the original and swap them out after I rebuild it. then I got a backup too!

Ya got me on the transmission deal maybe a bad torque converter(if they have those) but hey if your gonna pull out the trans and t-case why not just swap to a manual?

Good idea, actually thats what I ended up doing, all is well now except an oil from the top back of engine. it took about 15 hours and i kept the shift sensors off the auto plugged in and in Park so that i wouldnt have to worry about re-wiring stuff, ended up with a flashing O/D light but thats it

Right on! Thats normal for the swap to have the flashing O/D light. Oil leak is probably leaky valve covers(at least thats my problem now).

Awesome man good luck
