AT tires for stock 4th gen (pics on page 2)

I hate my Dunlops. I trashed one this weekend on the road somehow. I've been meaning to upgrade the tires anyway.

A lot of people here like the 265/70/17. There are good reviews on it and the price is really good on tirerack right now. I'm a little worried about durability and offroad ability with this tire. Snow driving is also important as I'm in Pittsburgh during the winter. I'm coming from my LR that had BFG AT/KOs. They never let me down and were very durable. They are also heavy and I fear will hurt my MPG.

Which brings us to the BFG AT. Will any size fit the stock 4runner? I love everything about them except the weight and price. They are 200 vs 143 for Revo's. Anyone run the BFG on a stock V8? How was driving effected?

Up here in the northeast we don't have many places to go offroad. Paragon closed and so there is only 1 park left to do it. I do get off pavement on the beach in the summer and I go in the woods for deer season. Right now I'm leaning towards the Revo's. Are there any other AT's I should look at? Anything else I should consider? How does 265/70/17 fit? I would like to do a small lift but I don't think I can get to it any time soon. I'd like to keep an old tire as a spare, I'm not that worried about 65v70 size with the spare unless someone has tried that and it was bad.

Others to look at: Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor, Michelin LTX A/T-2, Nitto TerraGrappler.

I think if I'm going to spend 200 bucks for an AT, its going to be BFG AT. The Goodyear's look overpriced as do the Michilin.

Sig fan? I'm more of a 1911 guy. :cannon: :biggrin2:
 
General Grabber AT2 never let me down and for 265/70/16 they only cost me $132 a tire

My dad has a Sig Sauer Mosquito .22 pistol and it is AWESOME!!!!!!!! i love shooting that gun and it has such great looks!!

Hmmm. I don't know about that Thai. I like Sigs and love my Glocks (yes, several) but nothing like shooting a fine-tuned 1911A1.

It's all good!
 
I can tolerate Sigs (I might have one if I wasn't buying tires). I even have a Walther and Ruger, but for day to day carry, my SA 1911 in stainless suits me just fine.

I can't warm up to Glocks, sorry. Friends don't let friends shoot glocks! Life is too short to have an ugly gun. Just kidding of course.

I think I'm going to go with BFG AT's from Costco. Their warranty and balancing make it worth while to me. I'm just having a hard time deciding between the 265/65 and the 265/70 sizes.

Well we won't go into all the "torture" tests that Glocks have survived (to the near exclusion of any other semi-autos) but I agree that they are not the most beautiful guns in the world. But beauty is as beauty does and my Glock 21 holds 13+1 rnd of 45 ACP and fully loaded weighs less than my empty 1911 - with less than 1/2 the number of parts! And all my Glocks have fed anything I have ever given them perfectly -thousands of rounds over the years. While light guns, they sit low in the hand, have minmal recoil, and I can get faster follow-up shots off more accurately than with my other handguns - although the 1911 isn't that far behind.

I do draw the line at DA semis though, hence the fondness for Glock and John Browning's timeless design.

While I am partial to Ruger revolvers, the only semi-autos they make that I would (and do) own are their Target 22 models.

Happy (and straight) shooting.

P.S. Go for the 265/70 (and put up with some minor rubbing). The Michelin LTX A/T-2 in 265/70 are my next tires - as soon as these Cross-Terrains wear out!

265/65 BFG Ko is E rated ONLY. I will probably be getting it in that size anyway.

Whats your total price if you dont mind me asking?
 
Costco has the 65 for $229 and the 70 (C) for $231.

I didn't realize the 65 was load range E. That sucks, I don't think I want to go that stiff.

I have the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor and think they’re great AT tires for the use you described. They are relatively quiet on the road, which is what you said most of your use will be. I’ve used them in packed sand with no problems (without airing down) and on numerous fire roads (wet, dry, rocky) without issue. They are expensive, but since they are made in America I was willing to pay a premium for that. So far there is no noticeable wear on them after about 10,000 miles.

As far as pistols, both Sigs & 1911s are nice toys. Now an HK USP, that is a real gun….

The first gun Im going to purchase is going to be a Barret M107 50 caliber sniper rifle that I will hunt squirrels and deer with.

When I get my license that is!

Very cool. Your Costco is putting them on? That's cool.

Costco is notoriously fussy about size and many have been turned down when they want to go to a slightly different size tire (65 profile to 70). It's good you found someone with some common sense. I understand them avoiding the major upsizing if that's not the business they want to be in but upsizing one size:confused: Damn lawyers!

I upsized one size on my Rover in 2004 or so without any issues.

They now have a section on their webpage where you email the "tire advisor" if you want to change sizes. I filled that out a couple of days ago and just now got a response giving me a link to buy the tires through the webpage.

I avoid all the hassle and just order them in person. The guys at my costco talk like they all have built up Jeeps so I guess they know a little more about upsizing than most.

BFG are very good tires, but...

they lack good water evacuation. They last forever, but start growling after 50k mikes and wet traction degrades even more. If I lived in dry weather and lost of desert, BFG. But in the wet, I prefer Revos. I had the LT C 265/70/17 on the BFG, and yes, it did knock 1 mpg off the mileage.

Die hard 1911 fan. Owned AMT Harballer junk to Colt Government high gloss blue, to Colt Lightweight Officers, to Les Baer Concept VII, to Sig TTT 1911 (Yes, Sig makes a full line of 1911s!) to my current Springfield Armory TRP Stainless.

Sold everything but the Officers and the SA TRP. Really regretted selling the Les Baer. I don't mind SigSauer or Glock. Would not gripe about having to carry one if I had to. But prefer the old slab side of Mr. Browning's.:cannon:
