Due to my many discussions with [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] about what I'm wanting to do with my rig, I just ordered the same "blur the line" Cooper S/T Maxx 265/70R17's that [MENTION=102009]T4Ranger[/MENTION] runs... That's after 3 days of me doing tire comparisons in weight, dimensions, tread depth, etc...

I'm looking for a set of summer tires and am torn on what to get. I like the aggressive look of M/Ts but in all reality ~85% of my driving is on asphalt and the other ~13% is on forest roads that are at least moderately maintained.

I really like the looks of the Nitto Trail Grapplers but feel they are overkill for 98% of my driving

so I'm considering
Cooper AT3 or ATPs
Nitto Terra grapplers
Hankook dynapro atm

but leaning toward Cooper s/t maxx
because they seem to be an in between from A/T to M/T

Looking mainly for opinions or if anyone has experience with any of these.

I was looking at the Trail Grapplers too, but like you, there was really no sense in going that route. The S/T Maxx looked like the best all-around choice for my overlanding build. They're +.15 in diameter & only 12 lbs over the stock Dunlops on the Trail (told you Greg ruined me lol). Add to that the strengthened sidewalls & a more aggressive tread than standard A/Ts, they fit my bill in almost every way. I'll throw up pics in here as soon as I can.

I'm sorry to say I have run neither of those tires. They are not really popular around here so I just stuck with what's locally available. I have heard nothing but good things about them though!

I drive around 2500 miles a month and only offroad maybe 50 miles a month. So percentage wise it's not much but sometimes it work related and I have to be there lol. Any of the choices you listed above will do fine. I picked a tread pattern that fits my use and not for looks. You need to do the same. Just remember that 30K miles down the road most tires get louder with wear. Good luck!

I ran a set of ST's on my '07 Ram. They were decent tires, performed well on the road in the rain, handled off-road chores well. Having said that....

I've tried a fairly wide variety of tires on 5 different 4wd trucks over the years. I remember when the 3/4 mudder (Cooper ST's, Mickey Thompson ATZ's, Dick Cepeck Fun Country's, etc) first began to come on the scene. Finally there was a better choice than the BF Goodrich AT's and the milder AT's that dominated the market! A tire with the traction of an MT and the noise characteristics of an AT.

My opinion has changed somewhat because, in my testing I've been a little disappointed with the 3/4 mudders in general. Instead of MT traction with AT noise, as a group I find they are closer to AT traction with MT noise. Advances in MT tire technology have made some of the newer MT tires very capable on the highway and surprisingly quiet. My Mickey Thompson MTZ's are great examples of this new breed of MT ( though certainly there are a lot of good MT's with similar performance).

The AT's I have been happiest with have been the Bridgestone Revo's. I never tried the Cooper At3's - But I wouldn't be surprised if they are similar: noise characteristics barely any louder than street tire, surprisingly good off road traction, outstanding foul weather road performance.

The 3/4 style mudders just never have delivered on the promise for me - traction really not much better in sloppy conditions than the Revo's, and a LOT of extra noise. I would advise you to carefully consider your wants and needs. If you would prefer a more aggressive tire, buy an MT. If you want less aggressive then get the benefits of the better AT's.

I run the Cooper ATP in a 275/60/20, have 3500 miles on them so far in rain snow and dry conditions with 2 road trips - I'm very satisfied with them, I originally had Michelin ms2's and this was my answer for a more aggressive looking tire with more at potential.

Cooper AT3s (275's) have been pretty good over about 7500 miles, but not outstanding in snow. Not bad, but seem to recall others (on previous T4Rs) were better, such as Firestones. And snow was the issue over last few months......

The only big differences between 17's and 18's is limited tire selection for 18's and you have to buy new wheels, again with limited selection. Take a look at the Tire Fitment Guide in my signature to see if they will fit.

Cooper Discover ATP in a "P" rated tire.

The ATP does not come in a P rating for 17", only LT (E).

The Cooper Discoverer AT/P 265/70/17 tires do come in a P rated tire (They are considered standard load and marked SL). I Just received my set of 4 265/70/17 Cooper AT/P tires yesterday 3/18/14 and will be installed next week. The AT/P are only available at Discount tire direct .com as they are made by Cooper especially for them. Price shipped to my home with free shipping and no tax $597.They have a really nice looking aggressive tread pattern that is not the same as the tread pattern on the AT/3. Thread depth is about .420 deep and the thread width is about 8-1/4' and a 55,000 warranty.
I will give a report after I have them installed and get some miles on them.

Picked up a good 1 1/2 mpg and forgot how much smoother AT tires run.lol I bought them back in Febuary and back to getting about 17+ mpg average with almost 1000 miles on them already .They are the Toyo Open Country II Xtremes in a 285/75/17 which translates to a 34 x 11.5 and is a E rated 3 ply sidewall tire. Open Country A/T II | Toyo Tires

They only make the Xtremes in a few sizes compared to the many sizes of the P and LT Open Country's and the Xtremes have a deeper tread depth and a more aggressive tread/shoulder design . They are almost a cross between a mud tire and AT and have a slight mud tire hum but not as much as the KM2's. They balanced out so nice taking less then 2 oz per wheel. Loving them so far but haven't had them offroad .......yet!:whoo: They only ran $251 a tire with free shipping online from Tread Depot and were there in 2 days.

Ditto the Discount Tire Direct points. My 4 A/TP 275/55/20s arrived yesterday and we're installed shortly thereafter. $750 delivered included the certificates for replacement.

Thats a really big tire - are you having any rubbing issues?
