Oldschool, are those E rated or SL? I've only managed to find the ATP rated in SL with OWL.

Trout_Slayer, they are XL rated Black sidewall.
From the Cooper website:

I don't rub at all. I've been running 34's for a couple of years now so the usual rubbing issues were taken care of long ago and tested flexing offroad where it's a whole new rubbing ballgame especially when turning the wheels when they are stuffed. Not to say there weren't hard lessons learned, like cut treads,on running bigger tires until I came up with a fix .
Lift,body mount chop,pulling the fender liner fwd ,higher caster setting(5.0),mudflap/liner trimming ,no front sway bar, proper backspacing/wheel width and rear bump stop extension took care of it. These Toyo tires are 20mm narrower then the 305/70/17 KM2's I just had on so there will be even more clearance as wider tires and moving wheels outward increases rubbing problems. I probably can remove the rear bump stop extenders as I was just catching on the rear wheel well lip when the rear was stuffed with the wider 34" tires.
Also, I don't think I would recommend running bigger then 33's without re-gearing with 4:56's as the tranny shift points would be even further off and affect the driveabilty. They are already airplane geared with shift points programmed for gas mileage as it is and even 33's affects it with the stock gearing. With 34's ,any hill would have it shifting back and forth and you could forget about cruise control unless your on a pool table flat highway with no headwind unless you regear to match the bigger tire size.

After lots of deliberation and way too much online reading/research....I decided to go with Cooper ST Maxx tires. Only no one had them in stock in the size I wanted. Or in my second choice size.
So then I did it all again and with the help of [MENTION=8206]harper7[/MENTION] 's pics decided on the Toyo Open Country AT II Xtreme in 285/65 R18
First day and only driven 20 miles but so far I am happy. Will see what happens - I'm very optimistic based upon what I've read online.

Looks good! I like how the trend is to put tread on the sidewall...makes 'em look testosterone infused (even betta than nitrogen)! :heh:

To follow up with your Open Country Extreme post, here's a picture of my P265's... note how the sidewall pattern is much less 'luggy'. I'd say its almost entirely cosmetic, as they barely protrude. I do love the look, and are only a pound or two heavier than the factory tires, so I haven't noticed any performance or fuel economy loss. They're also seem louder than the factory dunlops. Only been on a week, and haven't had a chance to test them offroad.

Yup. The "P"s have the least aggressive thread. "LT"s are in the middle, and the xtremes have the most.
I liked the look of the xtremes and they came in the size I wanted. In fact I dont think I could have gotten anything else in that size

Yes. The P285/70R17 Cooper Discoverer AT3 is a 4-ply tire. Weight: 45 lbs. Tread depth: 14 (no units on their site, not sure if it's 14/32 or 14 mm - Canadian site shows the same)
The LT285/70R17 Cooper Discoverer AT3 is a 10-ply tire. Weight: 55 lbs. Tread depth: 17 (no units).
I'm really considering the P285's. I've had pretty aggressive/heavy tires on both my FJ's. It's not practical for me.

I've had my 4runner for about a year and a half now and for about a year I've had it lifted. In that time I haven't had to use 4wd so LT rated tires are not practical for me either. So I guess I'll be looking for P rated cooper at3's. Would you recommend a place to get them from? Or the best time to buy them?

I just got a set of LT265/70/17 C from my local shop so I can't help on where to get them, but Cooper is giving a $80 prepaid Visa card on purchases of the AT3 through 4/15.
Probably the best price for ordering Cooper tires is (links directly to the AT3):

That being said I would suggest you try to see the AT3 in person, or at least Google up pictures. They get nice reviews, but frankly the sidewall is very plain and way too pedestrian for me. At least take a look at the Nitto Terra Grappler, which is priced slightly higher but looks far better IMO. With no intent to denigrate anyone's tire choice, the sidewall on the Grappler would never be mistaken for anything but a true AT.
Whereas the Cooper's tread pattern looks fairly tame, then the sidewall appears to the eye as a sporty looking road tire. On a 4th Gen that might be OK, as that model has a very sleek all around look. However your 5th Gen Trail looks "off road" by design, and the AT3 may not look appreciably different than stock Dunlops.
Add in you're running ICON's and I'd be concerned the AT3 would make your tires look rather under-gunned. At least try to find photos here or Google to give you a comparison. I went to Discount and put the two side by side...let me tell you the visual difference between the AT3 and Grappler wasn't even close!
Likely the best price to order Nitto's AT is at Online Tires, and their warehouse is located in Cerritos so you can pick up and save a significant shipping charge.

Your other option is to go to Discount Tire with a print out of the Online Tire price, and I'll bet they match it since for you since it's a direct (no shipping charge) comparison. You'll also be able to see a direct comparison of the two tires we talked about, plus the Cooper ATP which is only sold at Discount. The ATP is basically a AT3 with a different tread pattern that looks more aggressive. Unfortunately they don't carry Toyo's in stock, so you won't be able to do a side by side on the Open Country AT II shown in this thread.
I see you're from SoCal, too bad you couldn't make the recent get together in Laguna Hills since there were lots of different tires on the row. Best of luck on your tire search!

Have you seen the AT3's in person? I haven't, and thought the exact same thing at first; they're look very plain. But considering the reviews between them and the Terra Grapplers, I'm not sure why one would go with Nitto.

Here's a good picture of AT3's. I think they look great. These are LT tires, not SUV. So the tread is deeper. But they're also considerably heavier.

I've seen just about every AT tire in person (certainly the major sellers) and driven many of them. I would add pictures are nice, but at best two dimensional. Your eyes see in depth, and the photo angle is critical too. For example the AT3 is lying on it's side featuring tread and almost no sidewall in that photo. However when a tire is mounted you see mostly sidewall with some tread. That's when the Cooper looks a little bland.
In my experience lesser aggressive looking tires show better in photos, while more aggressive tires will be more appreciated in person. That can be attributed to a photo lacking depth. For example the AT 3 sides are basically flat which is less important in a photo. While the Toyo or Grappler have plenty of side action which is far more noticeable to the eye.
As to reviews they're nice but useless without context. Who knows if someone is for real, and there are companies who hire themselves out to dis the competition online with fake "reviews." Someone swears they "only got 20,000 miles and the tire was bald!" Riiiiight, that's as believable as the "reviewer" with "80,000 miles and got half the tread left."
Fortunately where I live many people drive on AT's and will give you their experience. In addition I've found immense help right on this forum. Search for pictures of rigs in environments you want to drive in or driving a tire you like. Then PM the member and mention what you're trying to accomplish. Virtually everyone asked responds, with reliable information right to the heart of your specific question.

These look nice actually!!! The tread pattern looks very similar to the cooper's with more sidewall, pretty cool.
I would love to hear an updated review as the tires wear out!...

Who buys tires based on looks alone?
1. Applications (off road, on road, mud, rock, interstate only, lots of rain, etc)
2. Performance (width, P vs LT, tread wear warranty)
3. Price ($1.5K vs $750)
4. Looks
If the first 3 criteria are identical then by all means go to looks as a tie breaker but I have yet to see two different tires make it to the 4th level tie breaker.
The truth is EVERY tire out there has something going for it. Good luck!
Honestly 99.9% of my driving is done on local streets or short highway. I get a smile on my face when there's a dirt parking lot I need to park in.
That said, in the past I've had BFG all terrains on my tacoma before. They performed well for me with minimal road noise increase and a minimal gas mileage decrease. I also got a friend his 285 duratracs on his tacoma, while I love the look and aggressiveness of the tires it doesn't out weigh the fact that the tires are expensive. I've rode in his truck and it's loud and I know for a fact that the tires hit the gas mileage pretty harsh.
What I need... An all terrain tire that's best mainly for highway, local driving, but yet able to take on a lets say...Azusa canyons (my nearest offroad area). I need tires that will be on the quieter side as well. Seems like I wanna try out the coopers for the value and the reviews it's gotten so far. An added plus is that it does come with a 55k warranty.
I'm guessing that not a lot of people have tried out the cooper at3's in a P rated 285?
