At Wits End with Squeaky Brakes!

Hi folks,
My rear brake pads wore out, so being a little cheap I replaced just the pads and left the old rotors on. Well they then squeaked (screech!!) whenever the truck would come to a stop at low speeds. I finally decided I couldn't take it anymore so I bought nice, new Bosch QuietCast rotors and pads (how could they not be quiet its in the name right?) Well I installed them and sadly the brakes still squeak... I greased the shims and the caliper pins (green circles), I replaced the brake hardware clips (but didn't grease them) and left the "cylinder slide bush" alone, orange circles. I also followed the bed in procedure of 6-10 stops from around 35 MPH and then 3-4 from 45 MPH and then a long cool down.

Any ideas what to try next? Maybe replace the caliper pins (they are $5 at Autozone) and "cylinder slide bush". Thanks for anyone's advice!!

Put grease on the pad support plates and I put a little more on the edge of the brake pad where it makes contact to them. If you don't add grease, this is just dry metal to metal contact at these points where the pad slides. It would cause a groaning in the rear when I came to a slow speed stop before this. Now my brakes are dead silent.

Have you checked the ebrake pads inside the rotor? Could be something in there.

Well I decided to double check and grease up the front pads tonight since that is easier than messing with the rears. Turns out two of the pistons on the front passenger caliper have seized! :-/ The Autozone remanufactured ones are $64 with several good reviews and in stock... any thoughts? I'm normally hesitant on Duralast parts... Toyota Parts Deal wants $215 for OEM.

I went with non OEM calipers and they worked fine, had a seized piston also on the OEM caliper at 175k

Sadly they can all seize but I went with an aftermarket coated set maybe 3 years ago and they are still fine. The plus side with someone like Autozone is you can get a lifetime warranty so you could keep swapping them as they fail.

First start with the failed parts.

Do the brakes squeak when the brakes are applied or all the time.i had e-brake hold down hardware fail on all 3 of my 4runners. When they fail its the most annoying noise. If they are no good do not go aftermarket, the hold down pins are a few mm too long and the spring cup scrapes the axle deflector on the hub. The ebrake pins rust very quickly and they get very thin.

Thanks! They only squeak when the car is just coming to a stop under 5 MPH. When driving or braking at higher speeds no squeaks or noises at all. Hopefully replacing the front caliper fixes it!

Suggestion, when you have the fronts apart, take some brake grease and put some on the brake shims where it meets the caliper and pistons. Some people may balk at this but it aids in keeping any pad noise to a minimum. I have powerstop brakes on mine and it is suggested by them.

Well guys, replacing the caliper seems to have fixed the issue!! Fingers crossed it doesn't come back, thanks for everyone's help!
