ATF Question 2002 Sport Edition

I am confused. I went out to drain some of my ATF and replace it. 4Runner had sat overnight and I got 5 1/3 quarts out of pan. The manual says I should have gotten 2 quarts out.

I am going by the dipstick and have added 4 qts and it is just now in the "cold" range. I run through the gears and leave it running in Park while I check the reading on the dip stick.

Do I just keep adding and check the ATF when hot and do whatever the dipstick says regardless of what the manual says?

Yes. keep filling to the 'cold full' line. It should take pretty close to the 5.xx that came out.

Drive it, warm it up and confirm you are in the range for 'hot'. Trust the dipstick.

You should always put back whatever you take out. If you measured it and 5 1/3 quarts came out, that's what I'd put in.

The only problem is that I think it was overfilled before. Also, I am using Amsoil ATF and believe it or not, it is hard to get the fluid hot. THis makes me think I may overfill it by adding according to the dip stick and get it full but in actuality the fluid has not gotten hot. I guess I can drive it for an hour and then check it, huh?

Yes, get it close and drive it for a while or set the P-brake, chock the wheels, place the trans in D or R (whichever would be safer if it got away) and go have lunch. In 20 minutes it'll be in the normal range.
