Atrac actually only available in 2009!?

I have been reading several posts about Atrac on 4Gen. However I noticed that from Toyota official information only the 2009 TE has Atrac. There is a button for it. Other models only have trac control. I feel most people talked about here are actually trac control but not Atrac since their cars are not 2009 TE.

Trac control is a simple theory. I am not sure what is difference between Atrac and normal trac control. I did a little bit reading on that. One article said the Atrac does not cut engine power as normal trac control does. I know if we lock Center Diff. the trac control/VSC does not cur powder either. Does that mean the normal trac control on the 4Gen can be equally powerful as the Atrac? From the videos in the forum the normal trac control seems to be pretty effective. Thanks.

You might enjoy reading this as well ..2009 has an A-trac switch to turn it on or off ..but it has been on 4 runners for several years.

What the trucks do is pretty simple but inconsistent terminolgy can make it seem complicated.

For the 4th gen (and I presume for all gens) Toyota differentiates between the terms traction control (TRAC) and active traction control (ATRAC) by whether the truck is 4WD or not.

TRAC=2WD
ATRAC =4WD

It's possible the 2009 has the more aggressive ATRAC like the FJ, but all 4WD 4th gens have ATRAC.

Urban Runner debuted in 08. But yeah all 4X4 T4Rs have ATRAC.

The term Traction Control (TRAC) is problematic as it has been used differently within Toyota at different times and in different departments.

The point of confusion is whether the term is meant to be restricted to just brake pulsing or whether the potential for engine de-throttling is included.

The term Active Traction Control (ATRAC) has suffered some variation of use, too, but it's much clearer because it is always restricted to just brake pulsing.

So.......if you didn't use the rear locker in the 2009, it's still possible the ATRAC (brake pulsing with no engine dethrottling) in it is the more aggressive version that might perform a little better in certain conditions than the previous 4th gens. It also may be that the more aggressive version of ATRAC is only evident in low range and that center locked in high range would behave the same as previous 4th gens.

There are a couple of 2009 TE owners around. Hopefully, one will chime in.
