Attempting to turbo a 4runner, anyone ever tried?

I've been talking to my buddy who owns and runs the site sloppymechanics.com about possibly ass-mount turboing my 4runner. Weighing all the options, figuring out what would be best to tune it. Wondering if the blower guys can weigh in on what they used if anything, to tune theirs?

STS makes a turbo for our trucks, i saw one for sale in my local classifieds but i couldn't find it to post a link. Im not that knowledgeable on turbo's but it looked like the STS one is one of those exhaust turbos that hook to the exhaust pipe and not the intake. (im not talking about those little whistles either) it was legit but yeah its been done. are you gonna do it?

hahahaha the whistles. i may start buying parts up in the spring time and make it a spring/summer project. i dont forsee myself putting a lot of money into a crazy lift setup maybe something mild with some decent tires and depending how the price of this all works out i may try to get it done for around 2500 or so. well see. gonna check out youtube and some other forums now.

yeah man this one from sts looked pretty simple from what i remember, it had an exhaust pipe with the turbine on it and a couple other things. I've only seen that kind of turbo on one of the Lexus ISF's

They make a kit for the Tacoma, so why wouldn't it work for our trucks? 3.4L is the same engine, the only thing I can think about not fitting wise would be the exhaust piping. In theory, the system should still work since it's the same motor.

It will. The only thing that you have to figure out is where the filter/intake will come from. On the Taco it is mounted up inside the bed wall. Also if you run sliders, the return pressure tubes run outside the frame rails.

The Supercharger is proven. So why try to reinvent something that works? And for the same money.

I wouldn't be buying a kit, most likely making one of our own. check out the silverado my buddy made an assmount kit for.

how much can the blower be done for? im not a big fan of blowers.

A few things that would have to change on a wheeling vehicle would be where the air filter is, has to be higher. And the compressed air return, it can't be hanging down like that.

New Toyota SCs are ~$2500. If you have detonation you can add the 7th injector from URD. - Underdog Racing Development

When wheeling I want power from the bottom up. The SC is there. The turbo would have to spool up.

If you need tuning help I would talk gadget at urd. They made this sweet twin turbo 3vz motor in a 4runner. For tuning I think a map2 or a haltech unit would be best.

actually all turbo systems work pretty much the same..... the difference with the rear mounted ones is that you can use your stock exhaust manifold, you still need charge pipe(s) running back to the engine bay and into the engine via the intake manifold.... the fuel setup and tuning will be the hardest thing with our runners imo... the rest is just fab work.... i had a turbo swapped integra in my younger years... here is a diagram of the basics

yeah i think its in Draper... i actually got offered a job there last year to sell the systems except i was already hired at lone peak to fight fires haha but no the the owner is way cool.

thats not a bad price. maybe once i start pricing out hard parts haha if it exceeds that by too much i may change my mind.

Also note that the stock engine can only handle so much boost. That URD twin turbo motor most liley had a bit of work done on the internals.

I personally would just stick with the SC since it's proven and doesn't require a alot of custom work to make it work right. I don't see the benefit of the turbo on a 4Runner.

^your right. it used to be a race spec motor but they added a couple of snails and now has around 800+ hp. I'm sure LC engineering can build you a good foundation as far as internals and the turbo.
